Primitive1
I have a quilt on the frame and the customer gave me Hobbs cotton batting to use. It is very thin and has bumps on both sides. I have looked at past threads and the Hobb's distributer even suggested that the bumps should go on the top. I am getting pokies, so I unloaded the quilt before I got too far and turned the batting over, changed my needle and still have lots of pokies....I have emailed the customer and explained the situation to her and asked her to make the call if she wants me to go ahead with it knowing she should wash it when she gets it back which MAY make them go away or if I should go with QD batting.. All this to say - does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions? Here is a picture of the 2nd try with the batting...
LibbyG
Do you think it might be the backing material and it wouldn't matter if you changed battings?
KathG
Vicki, I am with Libby in wondering g if it is maybe the backing. It might just be because the photo is zoomed in but the backing looks like a loose weave.
Katydids
Same here.. From the looks of the backing it looks like a very loose weave. I use Hobbs all the time, at least the 80/20 and the only time I have these pokie issues, is when it is a loose weave backer.
Tamarack
Since you can't change the backing I would change the batting! I don't like Hobbs battings as it is uneven and the few times I have been given it I have gotten some pokies. Go for the QD batting, it can't make it any worse! Primitive1
Thanks, I am waiting to hear back from my customer on whether she wants to go with the QD...the backing is not that loosely woven, the pic is pretty close up - I think it's the batting... s.waits
What kind of thread are you using? Cotton thread with cotton batting seems to give me more headaches. Maybe try a finer thread that drags less
Primitive1
Sharon, I am using So Fine/Superior along with glide prewound bobbins.
Quilting Heidi
Vicki, I'm with Patty it might just be the combo of backer and batting. When I get this issue I have not found a way to fix it. It is so aggrevating. I did the same thing you did, stopped and called my customer.
iquiltit
backing because it is loosely wove imho. Carol
Primitive1
My customer is good with me changing to QD - I am so glad - because when she shows it at quild show and tell, I want my quilting reputation to be good....hopefully that will be the fix! Kay Anderson
I hate those loose weave backings too! But, if you are forced to use it, try changing to a smaller needle and a fine thread. I've used this combination with success. Try a little and see how it reacts.
Primitive1
Well, good news - it was the batting! I switched to QD and no more pokies! Yeah!!!
Starla
I have been having alot of pokies with Hobbs batting....I think they changed their manufacturing recipe. It is thinner and has alot of bumps in it ( 80/20 ). Starla
