Bonnie in Ok
Do most of you use one or two layers of batting for your quilts and why?
RoseCity Quilter
I use two layers of betting only on special quilts that I realy want the quilting to show on. I do not use two layers on every quilt as of course it is more costly.
Guest Linda S
I generally only use one. I know lots of people like that 'faux-trapunto' look with two layers, but I think if you want trapunto, you should do it with cut away or just use something like Dream Puff and be done with it. witha'K'quilting
Generally one layer...sometimes two. Just depends on the quilt. One of my daughters likes heavier quilts as she gets realy cold in the winter...her quilts get double layer of bamboo or cotton.

Primitive1
I've never used more than one although I hear that some do on show quilts, one to stabilize and one to add dimension ie: wool.

Quilting Heidi
I will use 2 layers if I want a trapunto look or it is a show quilt. I will also use 2 layers for some wallhangings. I put a layer of dream poly to give it body and then I'll use a 1/2 layer of wool so that the quilting will show. Other than that I only use one layer. meg_marsh
Generally one. I do use 2 for wall quilts - a light weight firmer batting for the back (helps the wall quilt keep its shape) and most often wool on top.
Janette
I usually only use 1 layer which is costly, and heavy to sleep under, so unless it is really cold maybe I would add two layers. I used two in a wholecloth wall hanging which gave great definition from the wool.
Oma
It depends on the batting I'm using on whether or not I use one or two layers. I don't do show quilts or wall hangings. All of my quilts are for general purpose use. I found myself using two battings on most of them to get the extra loft I liked so now I use a higher loft polyester type batting. I don't use Mountain Mist although for years I did (gasp!) and I don't remember it ever being a problem. I lived in the mid-west and it was all I could get in the 80's. And they always had a free quilt pattern on the back of the label. LOL. I don't like the thin Warm and Natural because it seems so flat so I usually double it up with Hobb's 80/20. I like to buy my batting off the roll at a LQS and I buy their expensive batting when they have their 40% off sale.
