cegates
Is there a recommended schedule for putting new grease in the gear box? If not, what are the signs that this needs to be done? Thanks, Carol
jimerickson
Carol: I don't think so. As I understand it, the only purpose the grease serves is to dampen the noise the gears make, so there is no maintanence need for it. When it needs to be done? Since it's only for noise control, it follows that you'd repack when the machine gets loud from the gear noise. This is what I know, maybe someone else knows a bit more about it than me, and will have some additional information for you. Jim
meg
Mine was just done and I can hear a real difference. Nothing I can feel or see, though.
Oma
All I know about grease in the gear box is Dave sure packed that sucker full.
BethDurand
I had to re-pack my gear box when I could no longer hear the stereo while quilting. Amy sent me the directions and the grease, and all was well. It's not a "fun" job, but surely makes a difference.
Primitive1
Agree, I've done it once too, only a pain because you have to take the machine off and have it upside down to get to it. Only needs it when it gets noisy.
shirleyl
Dave has a trick and doesn't even have to remove it. He had several other neat little things he showed me and those were worth the cost for a home visit. Shirley
cmkeindl1
I just flipped the machine upside down while still on the roller - I had to loosen the carriage from the table rails though, but much easier than removing the whole machine?! How the heck did you do this? I just can't visualize this.
Katydids
I have repacked mine while still on the frame, without flipping it upside down.
cmkeindl1
You know the grease is pretty thick - but I'm kinda messy so that's probably better I flipped it. This is a terrible drawing but hopefully it will give you the idea. flip machine.pdf
