Boni
I just noticed this witch hazel tree this morning. We had a good frost last week, but it looks like it wasn't hard enough to paint the whole leaf. Could this be inspiration for one of your painted quilts? Go for it! There are more views on the link to Flickr. Thanks for looking.

hollyc
We were just in Vermont and found around 12 covered bridges. So pretty with the fall colors and sometimes a bit of low fog or mist in the morning giving the world an extra quiet surreal start to the day. We traveled with friends for two days...somehow these two traveled without spending money...they went from place to place that they knew would have free food samples and got full eating samples at the Vermont Country Store, farm cooperatives and cheese samples, free bread and even fingered about 1/2 pound of free chocolates from Lake Champlaine Chocolate Factory...I've never seen a couple round a room so many times looking like they were checking the merchandise, but stuffing free chocolates in her purse. DH and I were so embarrassed, we vowed never to travel with them again...they live int he Boston area. I've never seen anything like it. We hit quite a few eternal perpetual garage sales also. You never know until you travel with someone.
Chocoholic
That witch hazel is just beautiful, Bonnie. Do you know what the name of the witch hazel is (type, species, whatever)? All the pics are wonderful. I just love fall also, although I wasn't so sure last night when I walked about 2 blocks to have dinner at Quizno's sub shop. I had Thimbleberries club in the afternoon and had another to teach in the evening. Well, as I was sitting and eating the sky got black, the wind started blowing and pretty soon it was pouring rain. Wow what a storm, and I needed to walk back to the store. I figured I would be teaching the evening group soaking wet. But the owner of the shop then volunteered to get his car, pull it around front and drive me to the shop. I was very surprized and he certainly went above and beyond. I have been telling everyone in town, as I am hoping that will generate business for him. Today it was back to beautiful. My yard doesn't have any trees that turn pretty colors, I think I need to plant some, but it was sunny and the fall flowers are blooming wonderfully. No pics, however. Sorry. Boni
It is a Chinese Witch Hazel, Hamamelis Mollis. The blossoms are very fragrant in February, and the fall folliage is varied depending on the frost. This is what it looked like last year. I keep photos and make cards with them.
Bonnie
What cool picture those are Bonnie...I have never seen a Witch Hazel tree before....I guess I thought Witch Hazel came from a bottle. Isn't that where you get it....I've known kids who think milk only comes from a carton.... Love the pictures....and would love to some day smell the fragrance. Boni
Don't you just love the changing seasons? From the maples in New England, to snow in the Rockies, and Olive trees in California. . .gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling about God's providence. I don't think witch hazel astringent has a fragrance that I can remember. My daughters used it when they were teenagers. The blossoms smell very much like oranges or lemons, a strong citrus scent. Commercial witch hazel is distilled from the bark and twigs of the plant and is preserved with grain alcohol. (I found that out by Google-ing "extracting witch hazel".)
