quiltinchicks
hi everyone! Ok, I have this SW quilt to do. It measures 65x80. Its a big piece of fabric with the SW motives machine appliqued on. It has a 2 1/2" border. So my question is, should I mctavish all of the background? I don't think feathers go with the theme. Does anyone have any better ideas???? Thank you!

Oma
I agree...not feathers...but how about some kind of all over design using those gecko looking lizards? Something with a little southwestern flair?
Buttonflower
Wowser - tough one I think. The only thought I had was to try & stitch an inner border in the taupe, using a repeating shape & filling it with a pattern taken from one of the jugs. eg the lower right jug in the 2nd photo or the one in the top photo to the right of the lower hand. Some thing overall in the rest, but echo the small motifs a few times for better balance. As much as I love McT, I'd look for some thing more angular. Perhaps you'll get an idea for something if you look at SW art. Good luck, I'll be watching to see what you decide to do. Buttonflower
lisae
I could actually see some "modern" quilting...for example, varying sizes of pebbles or a combination of swirls and pebbles. Check out Angela Walters' site. She has some great designs that could be used to divide and conquer all that background space! http://www.quiltingismytherapy.com/
Anne from Guam
How about a mostly horizontal zen type water look? I don't see how you can break up the background with different fills unless you make some kind of mismatched grid to go around the appliques first. WestieMom
You could do squigly meander type lines that resemble cactus. Another suggestion would be a zig zag pattern.

Primitive1
Those are great! I must echo that you should see Angela Walter's book, she has some ideas that would work great...my suggestion would be a stipple but with points rather than curves that cross over each other.... ffq-lar
That's a lot of real estate to cover with an overall. Placing quilted motif scattered around the applique will add more interest but may also detract from the appliques--which are stunning. I would bite the bullet and do a medium-density fill all over the sandy fabric--something smaller that the smallest motifs. I would try something angular--like triangles in a meander. Another is that wormy, topographical filler that looks like an elevation map. Shannon does this one all the time and it would be fast and effective with matching thread. An outline and then a quarter-inch echo around the appliques would beef up the smaller ones. Just a thought--can't wait to see finished pictures! quiltinchicks
oh linda, i am going with the topography map style! that will go quickly!! thanks everyone for helping me!!!!!! I will post pics when we have the forum back!!!
ffq-lar
Here's the topographical meander--it can be done in any scale and when you get the rhythm going it's fast-fast. Swing a little wide on the outside curves and it really accentuates the "map" feel.
