Memory quilts form Bowling Shirts w/closeups

Recommended Posts

That is one spectacular "bowling shirt quilt". Never would I have thought one could look so good. You did a great job with the fabric and colors. How many shirts did you actually use on this quilt and what size did it turn out to be? Love it. Dar

Beautiful! I have a memory quilt with my husband's T-shirts from our surf meet (Wave Riders Against Drugs) we hold every year. I have it pieced but haven't quilted it yet. It's a Christmas present (I guess I should get it started). I will post when I finish it. Thanks for sharing your beautiful quilt. I love it :)

I used regular quilting cottons for the borders. I starch the heck out of all my fabrics before I cut them. It is the only way I've found that I get a product I can live with. Most of the time it works great. I did have to learn not to set the quilt to tight on the frame. Oh, and I use the side leaders I invented with the elastic and little curtain spring clip (love them because they are small and strong). Those side leaders allow me to keep the exact same tension on the quilt all the down. Works like a charm.

I had 15 shirts for two quilts. Had to design and paint the rest of the blocks. The quilts are 99 1/2" wide and 116" long. Each quilt is 3 blocks wide (14 1/2" blocks) and 4 blocks long.

Any resemblence to bowling alley carpet is purely by accident. I don't bowl!

Working from a photo, I did a painting of the bowling pins on plain white cloth. Then cut that out and appliqued it to my background block. Then I cut a circle out for the bowling ball, added some accent and appliqued that to the block. I later added the award badges and the ladies name from her bowling shirt.

I found this design in a photo, and did the basic shapes from that. Then painted it all directly on the background. Then (because I thought it looked bare) added all those badges to fill up the space. Oh, the bowling ball is from the border fabric and appliqued. He told me she used a ball that looked like that fabric and that's why I used it.

This is the last block I designed for this quilt. I painted the pins from a photo and appliqued them to the block. Then appliqued the bowling ball, (it has some paint accents on it). Then I added those badges. Did I say she had a ton of badges. Only problem with useing them was how stiff they were, caused some distortion on the frame as they didn't bend very well.
