mscott2611
Has anyone ever used a variegated thread in a bobbin before? If so what thread did you use and were you able to get it in a prewound bobbin? I am making a quilt for a fundraiser for my daughter's project graduation and the backing will be a black and gold stripe so I am thinking of using a variegated black and gold thread if I can find it for the bobbin. Any suggestions. Mary
LadyLake
I have never seen a variegated bobbin thread. The variegated threads tend to have weak spots where the dye color changes.
quietlifeaz
I used it on a customer quilt last month and had no big issues (King Tutt)
BobbieJones
I used Rainbow #829 (golds) in my bobbin on a solid black back with an Asian front last week (same thread on the top)and it turned out great! I have to admit having trouble getting the tension correct for awhile but finally made it.
meg_marsh
Variegated threads are fine for the bobbin - just remember to wind twice or your color exchange will be going in the wrong direction.
Zora
Superior Threads has SoFine in variegated now. It comes in three different weights, so be careful. It would work fine in the bobbin.

What do you mean wind twice, Meg?
witha'K'quilting
I use rainbows in the bobbin quite often. works like a charm for me. i obviously have to wind my own though. they do not come prewound.
meg_marsh
If you are using variegated on top, you need the color exchange to run the same both top and bottom. When you wind your bobbin directly off the cone, the color exchange on the bobbin becomes reversed - that is, the color exchange will now be coming off the bobbin in the reverse order from the cone. But if you take the time to wind the bobbin a second time onto another bobbin, the color exchange will be the same for both the bobbin and top. witha'K'quilting
for some of us...it just doesn't matter if the color exchange matches anyways! if your tension is good...it really doesn't matter.
mscott2611
After asking this question I have found that I cannot find any black and gold/yellow variegated thread so now my delimma is what color to use once I get the quilt made I will have to post pictures for suggestions. Thanks for the information though it will be helpful in the future.
Myrna Ficken
I would use a gold.
Gator
I suggested Fil-Tec (magna bobbins) come up with a pre-wound varigated bobbin. One can dream, can't we.
