quiltmaker54
Is there an aid or easy way to quilt diagonal lines except using a ruler? The maching is old and just will not move in a diagonal line that isn't jagged....

jimerickson
Quiltmaker 54: Short answer: No. Sewing diagonally plays to the inherent short comes of longarn quilting machines. The bobbin systems were designed to sew from left to right. Any other direction is a compromise. Sewing any direction other than horizontally or vertically involves moving the machine in both the X and Y plane, doubling the opportunity for moving the machine off line. Similarly, moving right to left challenges the bobbin system, which can result in imperfect stitches. What Cheri and Shana say is about the best way to attack diagonal stitching. Pulling the machine against a ruler is another option (with it's own set of challenges). Personally I try to avoid it as much as possible. Stick with it. You'll probably find an approach that will get what you need to have done, that works for you. Regards. Jim
quiltmonkey
You can definitely do diagonal lines with the Hartley Fence! Contact Myrna Ficken to get the instructional book. She even made a DVD for the Hartley Fence.

LadyLake
What year and model of machine do you have? It might be due for a factory overhaul -- very worthwhile for getting it back up to running smoothly and getting advice on any problems, directly from the APQS Service Dept. I'd suggest taking a class on using rulers for diagonal lines. They are tricky at first, but if you keep practicing, it will come. Make sure you are using an extended base when using a ruler -- did the Hartley extended base come with your machine? Also, put sandpaper dots on the bottom of your ruler so that it stays in one place while you move the machine. You might also want to go to the APQS website and check out the new M&M wheels or the Bliss wheel and track system.
