LeannM Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I'm looking for ideas on quilting this. I was thinking of feathers in the sashing and borders. Also thought about using straight lines 1/4 in. apart in each of the centers of the 6 inch strip blocks with feathers on the 2 outside strips in those blocks. On the 2" square I thought about sid to make them pop out. This quilt measures 72" x 72". What about the center window letting in the light? Anyone have suggestions?
Zora Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 Do you have to do custom on this one?? I rarely see a quilt that I would not attempt custom on, but to me, this falls into that category. I would do a nice panto or allover E to E. The fabrics are all so busy, I just don't see much showing on this except texture. Maybe something like an allover feather meander would look nice if you don't want to do a panto.
Bekah Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I agree with Lynn. These fabrics are so busy the stitching is just not going to show like you would want it to on a custom job. A nice all over will give it movement and texture.
Enchanted Quilting Posted February 24, 2014 Report Posted February 24, 2014 I would have the "window" sashings be the same as your other sashings. For the "windows" I think I would either cc or do your diagonal lines making a diamond type shape there. Love the batiks.
LeannM Posted February 24, 2014 Author Report Posted February 24, 2014 I have a lovely feather panto I'd like to try, so maybe this is the quilt I should do it on. I normally custom quilt most things, but this had me stumped. I like Charlotte's idea, though.
cmkeindl1 Posted February 25, 2014 Report Posted February 25, 2014 I think a feather panto would look good! Besides, the fabrics are too busy to show custom very much?
Quilting Heidi Posted February 25, 2014 Report Posted February 25, 2014 Straight lines would absolutely give this quilt the needed definition. You could do a squared feather wreath in the middle, feather meander in the dark areas and straight lines in the sashing. If you haven't tried a freehand feather meander this is the perfect place to try it out.
Mattie-Sue Posted February 25, 2014 Report Posted February 25, 2014 I agree with Heidi. I think the squared feather in the middle would be nice. Also the feather meander. One question Heidi. How would you do the straight lines, like diagonal going from side to side?

How would you do the straight lines, like diagonal going from side to side? Peggy either would work. I'd probably go straight but I think diagonal would also add some interest and define the spaces.
Mattie-Sue Posted February 25, 2014 Report Posted February 25, 2014 Thanks Heidi. I can see where the straight lines would definitely work and wouldn't distract from the feather work. I do have so much to learn about combining designs.
LeannM Posted February 26, 2014 Author Report Posted February 26, 2014 I love doing freehand feather meanders. Thanks, Heidi, for the squared feather idea in the center. and thanks to all of you for your suggestions.
LeannM Posted March 19, 2014 Author Report Posted March 19, 2014 Here's what I decided to do. What do you think? I've called this one "Dawn of Inspiration" because as I went along I had ideas come out in the quilting. I like the outline of the batik in the window. How do you make uploaded pics rotate? Sorry, you'll probably get dizzy looking at the pic with my Millie.

Beachside Quilter Posted March 19, 2014 Report Posted March 19, 2014 Wow, Leann! You nailed it; looks great!
