Belbelle
Here's a photo of an art quilt I just finished where I used EVERYTHING I learned last year at MQS. My objective was not to repeat myself in any block, and there are 49 blocks. I was also experimenting with different thread effects. <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/nSRH_7xj2ISXkwsrSYvP9A?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ji8elidBKQY/SdjSgQ209uI/AAAAAAAAAKY/lOGIqMeeEGQ/s400/P3070004.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/juliehq/ArtQuilts?feat=embedwebsite">Art Quilts</a></td></tr></table> Here are a couple of detailed shots . . <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/FXQ4-bIxPmmOSjfA729k_g?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/_ji8elidBKQY/SdjTkCZ9eeI/AAAAAAAAAKg/NqfXhjfPePs/s400/P3070010.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/juliehq/ArtQuilts?feat=embedwebsite">Art Quilts</a></td></tr></table> <table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/EpijMj18rD2UHPkCWgT5ag?feat=embedwebsite"><img src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/_ji8elidBKQY/SdjUO0vkEyI/AAAAAAAAAKk/Huk1vHXk41I/s400/P3070005.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/juliehq/ArtQuilts?feat=embedwebsite">Art Quilts</a></td></tr></table> While there are a few wobbles, it was just fun to go for it! jackie_lathem
I have to say this.. I have never taken much interest in the quilting. I focus more on the piecing and leave the rest to folks like you. But I have seen some fantastic quilting from all of you. Julie, I like the piecing. It is very simple, but the quilting just makes it stand out in a great way!! Ladies, if I send you my quilts, do you give discounts to the MQS volunteer chairperson??? Lisa Mullins
What a great sampler! Those quilts with all the squares never inspired me before, but yours is a beauty! Jackie....I am sure that most of us would be honored to quilt for you! I look forward to meeting you this year at MQS! I am so excited to be volunteering! Belbelle
Thanks for all your kind words. I made this in a class where we were focusing on color. This is based "roughly" on the TV set colors of Bill Moyers' Journal - - have you ever tried to hold up a color wheel to your TV screen? By the time I finished piecing and fusing I was going to do something really simple - - like a baptist fan with my CL. But my teacher said "you're a longarm quilter, why not show everybody what you can do?". My brain ached some days when I worked on it, as I wondered if I could really come up with that much variety. But I'd recommend this exercise to everyone, because it really forces the creative juices, and gives you a great sense of satisfaction. Now it hangs on the wall behind my Milli as a "cheat sheet" when I'm searching for the next creative thing to add to a space on a quilt.
DoryJM
Julie, your quilting is what makes that quilt pop! Without it, its just a bunch of random shapes. I would love to do something like that for myself--not only would I have something to show customers, but like you, I'd have something to look at when trying to work on a quilt. Great job! DoryJM
Thanks, Jackie...and as for quilting your quilts, I'd charge double! I'd have to so you wouldn't send them to me; I'm not sure I could handle the pressure:P:D:P

Getting in the drivers seat of one of those machines makes me a nervous wreck. Give me some fabric, a pattern or idea, a good rotary cutter and mat, my old yard sale sewing machine and get out of my way!! After that, I'm done. I just want to see it again when the binding is ready to go on.
Sheri Butler
Now Julie THAT's an idea! OMG. To actually make a whole quilt stitched with all the stuff you learn at classes. EXCELLENT Idea honey!!!
DebFigved
Very cool! This is exactly how the sampler classes evolve. I see a great teaching tool here!!
DoryJM
Julie, did you fuse the top rectangles/squares onto the background to create your windows. I keep coming back to this post; your quilting just makes the whole thing so vibrant. I really want to do my own now!
meg_marsh
very cool - and what a great reminder, advertisement, whatever for your increased skills!!! I might have to do one of those too - just not right now!!!
Belbelle
Dory, the inner rectangles are fused, the outer ones are pieced. I applied fusing to the fabrics first, then just freehand cut the inner rectangles, as I wanted each one to be a bit different for a more "artsy" look. I topstitched them down before I loaded the quilt for quilting. I'm thinking of doing a series of these, using different sizes and color themes, just to keep playing. The construction is relatively quick, giving me more time to spend quilting.
