mlsa3
My machine is set at 10 stitches per inch automatically. I never change it and have been wondering if lowering the stitch count to say "8 per inch" might look better. Nothing wrong with the way the stitches look now but just wondering what you folks use. Yes, I know I can try it but when I start quilting I forget about trying out new stitch lengths and then when I'm away from the machine I think about it. (They say this happens a lot when you reach the golden years.) David
Corey
I swith back & forth to both stitch lengths 10 & 9, try it David on a practice piece. A few rows of each would be helpful for decision making.
Primitive1
Maybe mine are too small but I consistently stay at 11-13 stitches per inch... I would throw a sample piece of fabric on and try them all and see which one you like the best...
Enchanted Quilting
I generally set between 10 and 12.
ffq-lar
Try to make re-setting the spi part of your starting routine. Maybe put a Post-it over the gauge to remind yourself a few times. Thicker thread looks great at a longer stitch length. And a thinner thread can go shorter easily. Mine is usually 10-12 spi, but my go-to threads are thin. WandaGerdes
I like 11 with glide. I think I'm stuck in a rut lol. It's automatic to set it at 11 as soon as I turn Patience on. It works for me so why fix what's not broken is my theory.
LibbyG
I like 11-13, but then I mainly use So Fine on my custom quilts. When I use a heavier thread I use 10. I just personally like the look of a tiny stitch.
Sue E.
I like 11 spi. I think 8 is too long but like others said, try it on a practice piece and decide if you like it.
jimerickson
I like the looks of the long stitches (8 spi or less), but if you do short radius curves, the long stitch makes the curve look broken. I generally stitch either 10 spi, or 12 spi. Jim
meg
I always use a longer stitch for SID. Mostly I'm between 10-12. I have noticed that my stitch length doesn't change very much lately when I try to adjust it. When I get thru the next couple of crazy weeks, I'm going to reach out to Amy & see what might have happened. But, I'm just thinking I better clean my wheels thoroughly first! Busy Quilting
I usually have mine set for about 11. I'm lucky the new Gen Millies it is set, so you switch it on and it remembers your default stitch length!
Primitive1
I never thought to use a shorter stitch with a thicker thread, I bet that does look nice-I will have to try that.
JenniferBernard
I usually use 11 spi for normal quilting. In my class with Sue Patton at MQS, she recommends going to a smaller stitch when you are doing tiny stipple work like pebbles. A larger stitch length would make the circles have square edges. She also does not use the stitch regulator for stipple work. She adjusted her machine speed for how fast or slow she is moving......woops! Sue Patton never quilts slow!! I do love her and her classes?
RitaR
When I got Penny, I tested different threads and stitch lengths and set it aside. Later I wanted to check a certain stitch with thread. Marking the sections with a marker, list the thread and spi you were trying out. It saves a Lot of headaches!
