AnnHenry
I would appreciate recommendations for my first ruler. I can't afford anything right this minute, but I need to get at least one. So, if the quilt police came and took away all of your rulers except one, which one would you keep? Thanks!
quiltmonkey
Can you keep two of the rulers? If so, get a Dainty Ditcher that fits in the palm of your hand. Also get a straight one that's about 10 inches long. Nothing bigger than that. Those two you will use a lot.
Mary Beth
My favoite is the SID ruler from Off The Edge. It is $24, I have included the link below. At MQS I purchased the "Little Girl" from The Gadget Girls. Maybe I just can't get use to that one, but I am not crazy about it. I try to use it, and end up putting it aside and grabbing the Off the Edge ruler. It just fits my hand better. http://store.offtheedgequilting.com/circle95.html
Quilting Heidi
I agree with Shana completely! I haven't tried the ones MB mentioned.
ramona-quilter
AnnHenry, do you already have your expanded base? You have to have one of those to do ruler work. I like Megan Best's ruler, the 5 inch one. I have a big hand but that one give's me better control. http://www.bestquilter.com/2.html
LauraJ
Don't do what I did and get a ruler but not have a baseplate on the machine. Doesn't work very well. I got two to start with - The Itty Bitty and The Key. Both from Off the Edge. I recommend The Key because it's small, easy to handle and you can practice many different things with the one ruler. Sid, curves, etc.
AnnHenry
Yes, I have the extended base. Thanks everyone so far.
lizziesgirl
Love the Itty Bitty, nobody can have that one.
Hollyrw
I'll add another vote for Megan Best's ruler. It's small enough that I can use it without the extended base for most SID. Holly
Sams Mom
Like Mary Beth, I'd choose two. The longer SID like she has but I think a must have is some kind of wavy ruler to use to make spines for feathers in borders. Of course I have a couple of different ones I use. AnnHenry
I want to bring this thread to the top again, hoping to get some more suggestions. Thanks, everyone so far.
Mary Beth
AnnHenry, What are you looking for in a ruler? Do you want SID? Do you want a ruler that, like Donna said, is good for spines? Do you want something with a curved side and a straight side so you can do 2 or 3 differnt things? There are some very, very good suggestions here. I'm not sure how many other rulers there are out there. Have you seen something specific that you have questions about? If yes, let us know and maybe someone has used it or knows something about it, and can help you.
victoriasews
The only straight ruler I use is Little Girl by www.gadgetgirls.com because it has lines every 1/4 inch and is small and easy to manuever. The only other ruler I use is Triple Play from www.lovetoquilt.com. It can be used for continuous curves of different sizes.
The Crafty Unicorn
The one that I use most is Janet-Lee's Favorite from The Gadget Girls. It is just the right size for SID and helps keep on track when outlining applique and stuff. It also has 1/4 inch markings on all 4 sides.
simplydivine
I agree - I MUST have a ruler from Off the Edge. (1/4" in Tab and lines) The Itty Bitty and the Stitch-In-The-Ditch. Many years ago, I went to a glass and mirror place and asked them to make me an acrylic template for some pattern. I think it was a 3 x 4 rectangle or something close to that. well, I didn't end up liking it for cutting the pattern, but I used it as a straight-edge for SID. This was before I used the Off the Edge rulers. The 1/4" tabs really make a difference.
AnnHenry
Mary Beth - I am so new at this that I don't know enough to answer your question. It looks like there are at least 50 different rulers out there, and I was just hoping for some suggestions about a couple of good ones for starters. April W
Ok I did it this morning. Sign me up for the "12 Step Program" After struggling with SID for 6 12" blocks yesterday, I ordered the Itty Bitty and the SID from Off The Edge. Thank you ladies for your recommendations and comments.

Bekah
Well this has been very informative. I have Megan Best ruler like Linda C and use it a lot but needed something besides a coaster for curves. think the key looks like the ticket
Westalee
Hi I have a Cross Hatch Guide that does not require any marking of the quilt, very easy to use and has a large selection of curves, clamshell and waves available (5/8" thick). My web site is www.westalee.com.au Quilters Rule is producing the Guide but not the accessories at this stage www.quiltersrule.com Leonie West
Mary Beth
I have the Key and have seen it demoed a couple of times...I still can't figure out the proper way to use it, so I just use it for going around applique. Since it has 4 different things going on, one on each side, that is about the only use I have found for it. You are suppose to be able to use it to line up your other rulers....seems like a waste of time to me. Maybe if I had the maker here in my studio so she could show me each time I pick it up what I am suppose to do with it, it would help
