85 yr old hand pieced--last one

Recommended Posts

She had begun to hand quilt it but gave up. Then she tried to meander by DSM--too much to handle. Then her daughter brought it to me to fix. All I did was "save it". It is computer generated CH with a spirograph design closely resembling the piecing in the center. I SID the points and inner circle. Sometimes simple is best. I didn't try to follow the lines, just to anchor. The medallion is 32 inches in diameter and my machine can do 24 inches max. I split it in two. Finished the middle CH manually.

When you look at it, just think of all the quilts this lady made in her lifetime, and how this was the last. I can't imagine which one will be my last. Who will help you finish your last one?

This one brought tears to my eyes. My mom finished piecing her last quilt about a week before she died (at 98). I take it out and look at it occasionally but have not quilted it yet. I have decided that when the time is right the quilt will let me know what I need to do to it. What a wonderful thing to be a part of Boni. Good for you, it is a beautiful "save".

Boni,

You don't give yourself enough credit - the quilt is beautiful. You did far more than save it; the quilting truly enhances the pieced top.

I used to believe, back when I did hand work, that I needed a quilt on the frame and one in the piecing stage at all time. It seemed bad luck to have an empty frame. Silly how the mind works. While I don't believe that my daughter will ever love quilting as much as I do, I hope that I teach her enough skills to finish any UFO's I leave. She has a horse panto she loves - she'll likely quilt horses across everything:) And that's just fine.

You all bring tears to my eyes, just knowing that you understand how special a project like this is. Thank you for your kind words and appreciation.

Yes, I'll probably leave lots of UFOs behind, because that's my favorite thing to do--plan and organize. If they never get quilted, I'm sure my daughters and granddaughters will appreciate the UFOs for PPP.:P Who says we have to finish them all?:D

Oops, did I just give myself permission to buy more fabric and plan more quilts? YES!!!:D:D:D:D
