doodlebug
i want to make a 'pretty' cover for my big ironing board. i currently have a natural canvas cover and, well, it's nasty! i use my ironing board as a 'desk' when customers come and i'd like to make a pretty removable cover to hide my iron's spit stains okay the question- the perimter of the underside is 159 inches...i want a snug, not tight, fit..what length do i cut my elastic for the casing??? i laugh at myself- i can put a zipper in anything, but this elastic thing confuses me
Busy Quilting
I saw a tutorial on someones blog where they made a lvoely bias casing and put a drawstring in it instead of elastic! Stretch 12" of elastic and see how far it stretches in length then do a math thing to work out how much shorter to make it. Lyn

Neher-in-law5
When elastic was put in waistbands we were to measure the waist and then cut the elastic about one or two inches shorter. I would run the elastic through a casing and then I would be able to pull it tighter if needed and knot off the extra and tuck it inside the base of the cover. It would be easy to change if it stretched out too much also. For your 159 inches I would probably cut it somewhere around 150 inches and see how that worked. DISCLAIMER: NO MATH HAS BEEN ENDANGERED IN THIS FIGURING--IT WAS NEVER USED! I would use a skinny elastic too, it stretches farther and isn't so hard to fight with to put in and pull tight. MizKia
If you Google "how to make and ironing board cover" you will get a lot of help. Let us know if it was hard to do as I need to change mine too.
dlnewell
Shannon, I would start out with 120 inches of elastic. Run elastic through the casing and pin with a safety pin to the casing. Distribute the fullness evenly and try it on the board. You may have to shorten or lengthen the elastic depending on the fit you want.
Quilting Heidi
Shannon you could also use the clear elastic and just zig zag over the edge. That way you don't have to deal with a casing. I'd make a sample to see how much stretch you need. If I recall correctly I normally end up using 1/2 - 3/4's of the piece before it is gathered. sspingler
Too cute! You may not want to use it for ironing!
JustSewSimple
That did turn out bright and cute! You may want to throw a piece of duck on top to iron so your pretty stuff doesn't turn brown from heat and starch! I know it would defeat the whole idea but you could pull the duck off when talking to customers so they could see your cutie board!
catsigler
Now that is the prettiest ironing board I've ever seen. Much too pretty to use! Mine is covered in canvas and looking kinda nasty, but I don't mind using it. LOL!
