newmillie2010
i was just informed by a hand-quilter that a baltimore album quilt is NEVER NEVER EVER machine quilted ... true or urban legend? i thought i had seen baltimore album quilts on the forum which had been beautifully machine-quilted. Quilting Heidi
I'm getting a BA in Oct. so it isn't true. There are some quilters that think they should never be machine quilted but I think they are the same people who think no quilts should every be machine quilted and those people are changing their minds slowly. newmillie2010
i'm guessing it's a 'purist' line of thought. but i kept my lips gently sealed and didn't dispute her strong position ...
s.waits
That's the same group of people who believe you can only use cotton batting. Just smile and nod, and don't bother arguing, it's a waste of breath!
sharni
IF someone wants to have every quilt all cotton from fabric, thread, to batting, and feels that every stitch in both piecing and quilting should be done by hand, they are free to do it that way. If I or someone else wants to do it differently that is OK too. That is why Baskin Robbins has more than just vanilla. However, most who think they are "purists" want to restrict everyone to their method....be it quilting, politics, or expressions of faith.
srichardson
I was at the Long Beach Quilt Festival this last weekend. There was a Baltimore Album exhibit. Some quilts were hand quilted and some were machine quilted. Several years ago a member of my guild won a cash award at Road To California with a Baltimore. She machine quilted it on her Millie. I have been making one for several years. It was my intention to hand quilt it. I now know that won't happen because of arthritis in my hands. I know that lots of quilters have the same issue too. It is rather like the art quilt/traditional issue. Things change and life still goes on! Sue
ffq-lar
I have quilted four Baltimores on the machine. Two were almost identical and from the same applique class. All four customers knew it would never be finished if they hand quilted it. Issues with arthritis and carpal-tunnel surgery stopped two of them and the other two knew they would hire a quilter from the beginning. Everybody has an opinion and you know what they say about opinions....:P:P
jeri
I've seen a number of them that were machine quilted
Primitive1
I would ask those who think they should only be hand quilted if they used an ott light, poly thread, and anything other than 100% cotton batting....
Guest Linda S
That's a load of happy horse manure! She most likely can't use poly thread because it will cut her quilt, too!
sewhappy
I think whoever's quilt it is they can do with it what THEY want-If the others are paying for the quilting whether by hand or machine then they can have a say in it!! Otherwise they should just keep their opinions to themselves.
dmilner
I love hand applique and have more than one quilt on the go..... Yes, really! I also know that I want them machine quilted (probably some heirloom quilted).....and I also know that I want to do it myself! I am a purist in that it will be 100% made by me. It's my quilt and I love to give them away to special people in my life. Honestly, I can't hand quilt them to be as beautiful as I want them to be. It is the quiltmaker's preference. Donna P.S. If something happened that I could not machine quilt it, I would not hesitate one bit to have it quilted for me by one of our fine professional people! The pictures speak for themselves! GrandmaLKB
There was a gal in my quilt group a few years back who said " it's not a REAL quilt unless it is hand quilted". She also never, ever finished anything ! :)
quiltmonkey
I've seen some amazing Baltimore album machine quilted. Lots at the biggie quilt shows get ribbons dangling from their border. So, I would say if the owner wants hers hand quilted, that great. If the owner wants hers machine quilted, that's great too!
