lym95
I have 8 quilts, 7 lap size and one queen to do and they all have piano key borders. Suggestions for something easy without doing them all the same? TIA (include pics/drawings if you can )
witha'K'quilting
beadboard, crosshatch, curved crosshatch, circles, feathers. those are a few that come to mind.
ffq-lar
I will assume they have pieced piano keys, and not stitched piano keys? If that's correct----- 1-Squiggle in the ditch (SID up the border seam and travel on the batting to the next seam) 2-Small loops up one ditch and down the next (Same traveling method on all) 3-Stitch loops or curls on the center, avoiding the seams 4-Use the seams as a spine and space leaves alternately on either side. 5-Refer to the braid design I shared a while ago on a Strips and Curves quilt 6-Any Line Dancing segment you like, placing the outside segment on a line where the binding will attach 7-Feathers up one "spine seam" and back down. You can alternate the direction in adjacent pieces for more interest. (Feathers up on this seam and down on the next.) 8-Mark a square grid on the piano keys if the length is right (like 2 inches wide and 6 inches long) and do CC's in the grid--pumpkin seed looks great if there are at least three spaces in the quilting area. Did that help? Have fun!!!

Sandra Darlington
On a quilt I did for someone, the outer border was very full, so I quilted piano keys on it and to suck in more fullness, I stippled every other section. This was done out of neccessity, but it gave a different look to the usual piano keys.
Sandra Darlington
Another picture... I had to push some of hte fullness to the stippled section and even pleat it to make the thing lay flat. It was so "full" I called the girl and asked if the borders were supposed to be ruffled. All 4 borders were rippled.... a lot.
Sandra Darlington
Here's the overall view of the quilt. It is hanging on the wall at our LQS. The owner rides a Harley. It was presented to him at his Grand Re-opening event. Most of the blocks were D-cups, so it was quite a challenge.

Quilting Heidi
Sandra you should add miracle worker to your business card. I don't think I would have even attempted that wavy border!
mrmquilt
Sandra, I thought that was a RUFFLE before I read anything. I guess a ruffle is a little girly for a harley quilt. LOL Michele
Pat C
You did an awesome job on this quilt! I thought that outer border was a ruffle too. Can't believe you were able to stitch all of that down!

Chocoholic
Linda, thanks for the list of ideas. They are in a folder on my computer now. I seem to get a lot of pieced piano key borders and since many of my customers know each other, I like to try to find new ways to do them. Thanks again. Sandra Darlington
Hi Debbie...if you are referring to my Harley quilt, thank you. It is a Circle Lord pattern board, so it was quite easy. I also used half of the pattern on some of the blocks - the orange star points around the Harley applique.
