sewingpup Posted October 8, 2015 Report Share Posted October 8, 2015 Hi, I just picked out a bunch of stitches.....I have been winding my own bobbins mainly but had tried some Superior so fine prewound bobbins....what I noticed at first was that I had to loosen my tension on my dedicated self wound So Fine bobbin case..I thought maybe I would not have to as that was the thread that I was using....then when I tested the bobbin by pulling out some of the bobbin thread was that it did not pull smoothly...so I pulled out enough to feel like it was going smoothly...the first two bobbins worked fine as long as I removed a bit at the beginning to get a smooth pull...then on the third one....I would get a series of loose top stitches...then stitches would be fine...then loose again....a bit of railroading of the bobbin thread....I put the bobbin back in the case and yep...it was pulling unevenly....so I removed the cardboard sides...better...but still had a spot where I would have to give it a tug....I went back to winding my own for this quilt. The stitches have now been fine through 3 bobbin changes so it had to be the pre-wound bobbin....just asking for some feedback on whither what I experienced is common or is it unusual....do folks normally remove a bit at the beginning and the cardboard? I also have gotten some Superior bottom line pre-wounds and filtec delights and classic ones....I haven't tried those yet.....which bobbins seem to work best and do you change what type of pre-wound you use if the quilt is going to washed and used? or if it is a show quilt? I thought pre-wounds would be great to use...but so far, even with my side-winder deluxe bobbin winder...it seems the self wound ones are working better.....thanks...Lin Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Beachside Quilter Posted October 8, 2015 Report Share Posted October 8, 2015 Lin, I've never had any luck with cardboard sided prewounds. I love magna glide classics and magna glide delights. They are my preference and if a color isn't available I wind my own using Glide thread, which is my top thread of choice. I know many folks use a wide variety of bobbins and top threads with success. I switched over to Glide exclusively a few years back and have had fewer tension dramas. I also keep a separate bobbin case for each bobbin type. My question is, I have heard the sidewinder bobbin winder is not very good. I guess people do not like the way it winds the bobbin. Anyone out there have any comments on this? mamu Posted October 9, 2015 Report Share Posted October 9, 2015 I had all sorts of problems with the self wound bobbins and tension on my ULT2. I went to the Magna bobbins (prewound) and have never looked back! There are times when I might have to take a little of the thread off the prewound or I might get a bobbin that just isn't working quite right....this doesn't happen very often however. WandaGerdes Posted October 9, 2015 Report Share Posted October 9, 2015 I'm with Vickie. Before I found glide and magna glide prewound, I had all kinds of tension issues. Not only on my Millie but on my dsm. I've switched over on both. Up until I bought this new sewing machine last week, I can't remember my last tension problem. I can't use prewound in this new dsm. I would have never bought this model had I known. I've found the prefect combination with glide and magna glide I don't have any interest fighting tension again. GMALKB Posted October 9, 2015 Report Share Posted October 9, 2015 I use the Magna Glide Classic pre wound bobbins almost exclusively...........now and then I will use the Magna Glide bobbins wound with the Glide thread............they don't last as long, but nice for the special quilts. I have a supply of the cardboard sided pre wounds, but don't use them much......I, too, have a seperate bobbin case for the Magna Glide and the cardboard sided..........that little spring can be testy to take in and out..........easier to have 2 bobbins. Quilting Heidi Posted October 9, 2015 Report Share Posted October 9, 2015 I mostly wind my own bobbins but do use classic filtec bobbins in cream and white and I use superior. I have not had any issues with the pre-wounds but I do have a separate bobbin case for those. I take the spring out for the magnetic core bobbins. Otherwise, I was thinking that maybe one of my DSM's Might like these prewounds....and Linda B, you take out the bobbin case spring with the cardboard ones too? Thanks everyone....I do have the magna's and they will be the next ones I try....The magna ones work ok with OMNI and SoFine as well as glide? It has worked fine for me, though I am no where as prolific as any of you here. It is a Turbo winder, I think the sidewinder is not an APQS product. Yep...there will be some frustration at first.....and every once in while later on.....You will get more confident as you get to know your Lenni....Since getting Lucey....I have learned to respect those show quality quilters a lot more! But I could not get consistent winding for the bobbin with the Sidewinder. I was lucky because one of my dsm's is a Bernina 730e and it uses the exact same size of bobbin, so I have always used the bobbin winder on this whenever I wind my own. I mostly use Bottomline thread in my bobbin because it is a thinner thread so the back of the quilt doesn't get so thready looking and I can quilt longer before I need to replace the bobbin. Now I go back and forth between the pre-wound Bottomline bobbins along with winding my own if I don't have the color that I need. I do use a different bobbin case for each because I need to set the tension differently for them. Both work great. Have a great time with your Lenni. Be prepared to play and practice and just have fun. I still learn something new on every quilt that I quilt. So much fun! Take advantage of all the great YouTube videos that are out there. So many great tips and things to learn without ever leaving home. And don't be afraid to pop on here with any questions or concerns. There's always someone willing to help. Gator Posted October 13, 2015 Report Share Posted October 13, 2015 I only use the Fil-Tec bobbins. I use them in my multi-needle embroidery machine too. Once I started to use these pre-wounds I haven't used anything else. I have a ton of Superior pre-wounds in my thread drawers, I never had a problem with them prior to switching to Fil-Tec. I've never wound my own LA bobbins. A long time ago, prior to APQS selling/issuing the Sidewinder a lot of LA quilters wound bobbins on their Berninas. I'm still using my 2009 machine with the L-bobbins so I don't know what bobbins fit DSM machines. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If not maybe I will go to pre wound bobbins. Lenni arrived today and my husband and I put it together and all is well except for one major problem!!!! We can not figure out where to plug what in.
