NQR - Now it's getting ugly- BUT IT'S PRETTIER NOW

Recommended Posts

Barbara, sorry to see the damage. The trees are beautiful, provide lovely shade in the summer, but are a menace in the winter! One of my Oak trees came down in the last snow storm. Just missed my house, but filled up my front yard! My first thought was, "Yahoo! Missed the house and look at all that firewood!" The power had been out for a day and a half and the house was at 53 degrees!

A pine went down in the backyard and crushed my dog kennel. Luckily, no dog was in it. Too awful out for them to be outside. The trees just can't bear the weight of the snow.

Living in the forest is great, except for too much snow in winter and wildfires in the fall.

Patty Jo--I hope you made it through last night with a good nights sleep. We have four more inches of snow and it's still snowing. The forecast is saying more and more through Christmas. We saw the blue flashes this morning real early. We still have power, thank goodness. DD does not yet but they are "snow camping". Generators are wonderful things. DSIL heats snow on the BBQ grill to melt water for washing dishes and such. Their neighbors are being helpful too. They realize there are three children in that household. The whole neighborhood is without power--service men were working into the night so maybe it won't be long.

It's getting really deep around here...

Good morning everyone. I finially got to sleep about 1 AM. Woke up this morning and it has been snowing enough to wipe away all foot prints from last night. I had another fairly big limb come down out of a fir tree at the back of the house but it didn't hit anything. Big chunks of ice were falling off of the trees behind the house onto the roof for a very long time and everytime it happened, I'd jump, the cat would dart under the couch etc..... So we were sleeping pretty lite all night long. My DD in Spokane called this morning and there is now 3 1/2 feet of snow there and DSIL was cleaning off their driveway for the 4th or 5th time so he could leave for work. She told me that she thinks I should stay home and I had already come to that conclusion. I would be a real fool (not that I haven't already proved that over the years) if I went ahead and tried to drive to Spokane. And there are no flights going until after Christmas. What a mess. I love to look at the snow, I love to walk in it and hear the squeeky crunch, but I really don't like the ice. I hope that everyone is safe out there

Well, it's now almost 2 PM and the neighbor who was going to come with a chain saw is still out working (he's the lineman for the local elec. co). There are wires down on a lot of the side streets and lots of limbs and trees have come down. I don't think that I will see him today. I had some friends stop by and help me shovel the snow and ice off of my driveway and also get the ice off of the patio cover on the back deck. They live about 2 miles away and gave me an open door if I loose power. They at least have gas fireplaces and cook stove so we could keep warm. I'll have to get the cat carrier, litter box, food, etc gathered up in case I need to leavel. I don't think it would take long for the house to cool down without elec. I'm thinking that moving south could be a good idea!!! somewhere that 40 degrees seems like a deep freeze would be good.

Here is a picture out of my kitchen window

Wow! You all in the PNW and NE states lake effects are getting DUMPED ON! :o

Take care of yourselves and remember these words of wisdom while on that slippery ice:

"It's OK if you walk like a duck. But it's not OK if you talk like a duck."

Patty, I think you are wise to just stay put at home and not travel those roads to Spokane. Not worth the stress and risk. You can travel safely when the storms have passed and the traffic and roads are cleared.

Wow, Pat, I've been watching the news and thought of you, but I didn't realize how bad Salem was until I read your posts! The storm seems to have stopped just south of Salem, because we are fairly warm, although not dry, here in Corvallis. My son flew in to Eugene last night from Chicago, through San Francisco -- I am so glad we asked him to spend the extra $100 to fly into Eugene instead of Portland -- he would never have made it! As it was, he was lucky the flight into Eugene was delayed, as the Chicago flight took off 1 1/2 hours late, and he was afraid he would be spending Christmas in San Francisco, alone, with no luggage. We were so blessed!

Anyway, Yes, stay put, drink lots of hot cocoa, and snuggle with your kitty!

Have a safe holidays, everyone!

Thanks Jill. I'm staying in Salem and have talked with my daughter and we both agree that driving at this point would be way to risky. I'm very content to be here although I really wanted to be with family this year. Oh well, I've been adopted by my friend and all her family - so all is good. Everyone, have a very Merry Christmas and stay safe:cool:

Our snow finally washed away but we have had flurries all day. Astoria, just 15 miles north is still covered. With still more snow predicted for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, our trip to Portland for Christmas with the kids has been cancelled. It sure could be worse, we could be stuck at the airport with all those poor people or out at the Troutdale truck stop. DD is a nurse at Good Sam, so we'll wait to get her work schedule before deciding on a reschedule date. DS lives in Gresham and they just are getting hammered with the gorge east wind. Gresham actually declared a state of emergency today.

Had to go shopping today to get Christmas dinner together for our other son and grandson that live here near us and who also will not be making the trek over the river and through the woods to town. We plan to make the best of it no matter what!!

The weather is certainly interesting, last December we got nailed with a hurricane and now this.

Here's wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and enjoy the day everyway you can.

We've got about 12" on our sidewalk. I managed to clear a path down that and up the stairs for the postal carrier. One dog is loving it, even though it's past his belly. The corgi, with his 3" long legs, and 10+ years is not so thrilled. He went out briefly yesterday, but started to limp, so was taken back home.

Chains are on the car, just in case, and DH scraped about 1/4" of ice off the windshield yesterday. Our plan is to head to Troutdale, just up the hill from the line of trucks, for Christmas. We'll be taking a different route to get there though.

Back on Thanksgiving my brother and I rode our bikes out to Troutdale and dinner at mom's. While on the ride, I asked if he wanted to do this again on Christmas. I don't think that's going to be an option, and certainly not sensible!

Merry Christmas to everyone. Please stay safe and warm.

I had to bring this back up to the top and give Boni's DH a huge thank you for getting my one tree down and helping clean up the mess from the downed limbs. I'm posting some pictures of Bonie's DH (now known as Paul Bunyon). Thanks a bunch Fred.

In this frist one, you can see a huge squirrel nest in the top.

There she goes!

And after all is cleaned up and hauled away, I now have a nice pedistal for a birdbath......

Thanks for looking. I'm happy, my neighbors are happy and the birds will be happy next spring...

Sure, Patty. The neighbors are happy and the birds with a future swimming pool in which to bathe are happy,,,, but I don't see any happy squirrels. :P LOL!

(ps: needless to say, I am not a fan of squirrels. Sure, they are cute n all but... When I moved into my house in 1994 I discovered some were living "rent free" in one of my exterior walls. I soon evicted them. I say if they don't pay rent they gotta go! So sorry and buh bye! And, my little log cabin has been "moved into" a couple of times without a rental agreement signed by these little pipsqueaks. They ripped a few holes in my chair and my sleeping bag. Again, they got the (shall I say) eternal and ultimate eviction notice from my DH. Sorry cuties. you can't live in my cabin either. Plenty of trees and stuff out there Mother Nature has provided for you to live in and its' not my house or cabin. (little terds!)

It was a beautiful snow storm! It's too bad that some have to be without power and other comforts like being able to go shopping and normal routines. I got quite a few pictures on Monday--the last day of fluffy snow here. Now we're back to mud and a weedy-ugly yard. Yuck--I thought the snow would kill all the weeds! And I'm appalled at all the scraps left that we threw to the birds and critters. EEEeeewwwww Now I have to clean that up too. so much for taking care of Mother Nature.

Patty Jo, I'm glad you're happy with the job. DH loves to do stuff like that. His brother is a logger in Scappoose and it sort of runs in the family. SIL, Kelly, said you were taking pictures. I got to stay home and work on my quilt and be here when DD and the grandkids came. DH and I will come by another time to visit--and I'll bring my quilt for show and tell. Now we can all get back to our "normal" winter--rain, rain, and more rain.

BTW, DD and I saw a humming bird today in my yard. We were so surprised--not enough time to grab the camera. I wonder where that hummer was during all the snow and ice? Amazing! I heard a discussion on the radio about people feeding humming birds in this weather. They wrap those heating pads--the little sticky ones--around the feeders to keep the syrup from freezing.:D

Wow, Patty Jo, what a difference. We still have over a foot of snow here. I live "over the hill" from Barbara in Janesville. Quincy is about 90 miles from Reno and 90 miles from Chico, CA. If you do manage to come down, I'd love to come over to see you again and finally meet Barbara.

Lynda, I lived in Astoria in '92 (I think that's the correct year) at the corner of Kensington and 8th. For those of you that aren't familiar with Astoria, think of it as a much smaller, much wetter:D, San Francisco--its basically built on a hill. It snowed there that year, too, but only a couple of inches. Everyone was out sledding; it was great fun.

The attached picture if of our Border, Chloe, the morning after the snow. We were feeding the horses--her favorite pastime:P

I am only 330 miles from Reno Nevada. I would love to get together with some of you. Namely Patty Jo, Barbara and Dory. How about a retreat sometime? I feel so isolated at times here in Ely. We had about 6-8 inches of snow on Christmas. It is melting now and we are expecting another storm to hit this weekend. Will see how much...if any we get.

Patty Jo,

What a nice thing for Boni's hubby to do for you! I love the way people help one another. IMHO that is what is wrong with the world right now. Too many people don't know their neighbors, don't help them out and miss so much! I'm glad you won't have to worry about that tree any more. We had aall the trees near the house taken down and after this last ice storm I'm so glad we did! The one in our front yard was an accident waiting to happen.

Snowing here in NY today. only 2 - 4" expected though and it is supposed to be over late this afternoon.

I have to tell you that Boni's DH was so careful. He had to fall that tree between a rose bush (I didn't really care if it lived or not) and the electrical box that sits between the 2 driveways. Talk about precision!!! And that is exactly where it fell too. And as he was cutting, his SIL & DD drove up so as soon as the tree was on the ground, this proud grandpa was introduceing me to his DD & 3 beautiful grandkids. Boni, I bet you had fun with them yesterday and getting to quilt too. ;)

Yes, I am blessed to live in a neighborhood where I've had several people checking in on me and doing what each can to help me. Boni & Fred came by just for a visit & to meet me in person mid December (the tree had dropped 2 large branches that day) and he offered to cut it down, so when the ice took another 8 or 10 branches off of it, I took him up on his offer. I hate to meet someone for the very first time and then take advantage of them. But I sooooo appreciate his work yesterday. ;);););)

Between my quilty friends, neighbors & church family - I feel very much taken care of. If any of my family lived near me they would be right there also. Now they are also releived that the "tree" is gone. Thanks again Fred.

Kristina, we'll definitely have to plan something. Bobette Miller lives in Paradise (just over the hill from me) and she basically took me under her wing when I started quilting (she has a computerized Millie). Then she and her husband came up for a visit (Paradise is near Chico---about 90 miles from here) and they were able to help my husband get his PR600 embroidery machine dialed in also.

Is Ely at the end of 50? If so, I was there 2 years ago. We did a 5 day endurance ride out of Shellbourne (its about 20 miles north of Ely). Highway 50 is one LONESOME highway...and what a long drive hauling a horse trailer.

What would be fun is to get enough of us together to do a retreat and have Myrna or Deloa or some other wonderful travelling quilter come and lecture us. Not sure that we could manage getting machines to the venue though. My guild does a retreat at Greenhorn Ranch (www.greenhornranch.com) every year. They have a huge dining/bar area and clear out the tables and quilters take over. Its a really pretty place and alot of fun...but I'm dreaming here.

Anyway...we need to figure out something!
