jmcclannan
Hey, friends, I have just finished this top. It's 40" square and I am making it for a very musical male friend. I need some inspiration for quilting. Also, should I use black thread in the black areas and white in the white or what? Mary Beth
What is the pattern??That is awesome!!
Neher-in-law5
that is so pretty. I like the design. I saw on here somewhere a quilting design that was loopy with musical notes throughout the design as well as the cleff signs. That would be fun in the open lighter spaces. witha'K'quilting
I almost see something Jazzy on it. Like trumpets, music notes, pianos, musicians. Maybe even Mardi Gras colors (purple/green/gold) for quilting to give it life. Just a thought. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

jmcclannan
Mary Beth - It is called Auld Lang Syne from the January issue of The Quilter Magazine. I'm thing of clefs in the outer border but I don't know what to do with the rest. The one in the magazine was just done in a meander but I want something more interesting than that. witha'K'quilting
Why not add an applique in solid black to it of the type of musician your friend is. Does he play piano, drums, etc. That would be interesting and make it personal.
Sheri Butler
Julie, my vote is white thread in the white area, then in the black and the white & black, i'd use black thread. WOW! Also, check out many, many sites for music stencils. There are sooo many out there. At least it could give you a pattern you could make a stencil yourself, or wait till you receive it in the mail. chickenscratch
Jen, I have some music stencils here that I've never used. Say the word and they are yours. I'd use charcoal or steel grey thread on it.
jmcclannan
Where did you get your music stencils? Are you really not going to use them? I hadn't thought of charcoal thread but I think I'll pool some on the fabric and see how it looks.
smd719
I really hate to say this, but you HAVE to do piano keys in the borders!!! I would also do series of 4 parallel lines in the larger black borders~~that's how may strings there are on most instruments. Just remember these two things: You can tune a piano, but you can't tune-a-fish. (Tuna fish) And if you're walking on ice, you have to C sharp or you will B flat! Sorry...former music major jokes!!! jmcclannan
Well, of course, it needs piano keys in the border, DUH!! Thanks for that brilliant idea. Now about the jokes. Oh, well, never mind.:P:P
dancingstitcher
Beautiful quilt Julie. The twisting ribbons are fascinating and I'd play those up so they continue to be dominant. Superior make a great black, grey, white variegated thread that I think is King Tut. I used it on a black and white quilt with great results. That way no matter where you stitch the thread compliments the quilt and any irregular lines are not noticeable. Because it looks really contemporary guess I'd be tempted to put some multiple circles in groups on it to signify sound coming out of a speaker, tight together in the middle and further apart away from the center. Good luck and please post a photo when you are done. Vicki

Sherri
Love that quilt pattern! I like the idea of piano keyed outer border.....and I can see a rope cable in the black borders/sashing - to play off the twisty white/black piecing. rebelette67
Beautiful quilt! Rosetta Stone is the name of the King Tut thread from Superior which is light silver, dark silver and charcoal. I too think it would compliment your quilt in whatever pattern you choose. Merryjo2003
Clever quilt! I like how it looks woven. I vote for the varigated thread. Love it. I would just do musical notes and clefs with the piano keys in the border. I'm sure it will look great whatever you choose.

Marlette
That is a great quilt!! Love all the ideas and Theo..that musician design id fabulous!! Could it be printed for a hand guided panto? Our sons play guitar, drums and piano. I'd love to make birthday quilts for them using that quilting design. My eldest son did a charcoal drawing in high school that went to the governors exibition in Columbus, OH It illustrates the instruments and his brother's hands holding drumsticks as if he were playing. I didn't know until a few years ago that the hands were is brother's who passed away at 22yrs. That, of course makes the drawing even more special! I think I could use part of that drawing as a base for my design. I look forward to seeing your completed design

jmcclannan
OK, I'm ordering the King Tut which means I can't get started for a few days but I really appreciate all of your ideas. I am soooo motivated. I'll post when I'm finished. Thanks again for your great ideas.

qfairy
Quiltrecipes.com also has lots of instruments of all sorts to choose from on her site. Just type in Music under the catagory.
Chocoholic
I like all the musical ideas, but I think you need to emphasize both of the"winding ribbons" that are in it. Maybe with just straight line quilting in the ribbon that starts and stops as the ribbon winds.
