WendyJ
When do you SID? Naturally not on and edge to edge quilt. But when doing freehand? Do you block each area before freehanding? I'm looking for some newbee advise....
ThreadWaggle
I end up doing at least some SID on almost of the quilts I quilt. I have done very few E2E quilts. I do more border to border freehand with a separate border design. And I do SID around the border. I just like the way it looks and it really doesn't take me that much longer. As far as individual block it depends on what I am doing. If I am doing CC, Terry Twist or line dancing, I may not SID. I am actually doing more and more SID on my customer quilts. By the way, I just got the Itty Bitty SID ruler from Off the Edge and I LOVE that thing. If you don't already have a ruler that has the little tabs that you put at the ditch and the indent for your hopping foot to slide down, they are really worth the investment. I got mine last week at MQS and have done 2 quilts with it this week. I can't believe how much of a difference it makes.
sspingler
I quilt on almost every quilt also. I did hand quilting as a business for 19 years and just got used to the "finished" look of SID. With the right ruler, it's easy. Personally, I love to SID.
meg_marsh
I do lots of SID & that Itty Bitty ruler is a godsend!!!! I love how SID makes everything pop, plus it holds everything in place. Sometimes I SID as I go along, other times I SID everything and then go back and fill in the spaces.
sewlinzi
I'm a lazy, lazy quilter... never do it!
witha'K'quilting
Originally posted by sspingler I quilt on almost every quilt also. Sorry, I could not resist this! I am glad you quilt all of your quilts. I know you mean you sid on every quilt. I like to sid as I go too. Then fill spaces. I agree it helps to stabilize things a bit. I may have to try the itty bitty ruler. I use an 8" straight ruler, but need something to fit better in my hands.
WendyJ
Thank you ladies. I defenitely go to buy that itty bitty ruler. I haven't bought any rulers yet except for the hartley base that comes with two rulers. The small one worked for me so far, but I do find it hard to guess the distance between the edge of the hopping foot and the ditch. Wendy
wnott
I do SID on most quilts and use Megan Best's 'Best Ruler'. Has the tabs and comes in 2 or 3 lengths. The 5" is perfect for my hand.
sspingler
Unless I do a panto or freehand, I always SID. I think it makes the quilt look more "finished".
Hollyrw
Funny, I was just thinking about this on Saturday as I pondered whether or not to add some SID to the quilt I was working on. I do SID on almost everything. Like Sharon said, it gives the a more "finished" look. My rule of thumb is, if you think it might need SID, it does. So I added some to the quilt I worked on over the weekend.
LinneaMarie
I use DeLoa's "little one" for SID. And I do a lot of it, even tho stitch in the ditch is a b**ch!! hahaha Look at deloasquiltshop.com for her rulers! I swear by them. Of course I'm really new. Quilting Heidi
I too SID almost every quilt I do custom quilting on. It just makes a huge difference IMHO. I use the dainty ditcher and like that one most.
Koala-T
I can't find the "little one" on DeLoa's website. I am going to order the appliquide. That's the only ruler I find on her site. Am I missing something? I thought I had seen other rulers there before.

Sheri Butler
Kelly, I've not seen that "little one" either. But, I do have her appliguide, and LOVE IT! I also have Megans Best 5" and LOVE it too!
hollyc
I don't know how you could avoid SID in any custom quilt. When quilting heavily, without SID, the fabric could shift and distort the block. I usually SID the entire quilt first and then go back to do whatever.
LinneaMarie
Sheri my sweetheart, DeLoa's "little one" was in Kansas City on Super Sampler night. If you call the shop I'm sure she'll get one for you!www.deloasquiltshop.com Miss you!
CarolO
Med, Wanda, & Heidi, Where do you get the Itty Bitty ruler, the Megan Best's Best Ruler and the Dainty ditcher ruler for SID? Carol Miller w/CompuQuilter Amarillo, TX
Quilting Heidi
Carol, This is the one I have https://www.canadianlongarmsupplies.com/sc_images/products/1563_large_image.jpg I don't remember where I got it. I know they have a delux version too but I've not tried that one. Yeoldforest has that. http://stores.yeoldeforest.com/-strse-174/deluxe-dainty-ditcher-sherry/Detail.bok
CarolO
Heidi, Thanks for the info. It's hard looking at it as to how it works. Would you elaborate? Thanks, Carol Millie w/CompuQuilter
Quilting Heidi
I assume you are talking about how does the delux one work? You hold it with your four fingers sitting over the top of the lip. Gives you kind of a handle to hold. I don't have that one though so I can't comment on how it works. Email Joann at yeoldforest and she can probably elaborate. lyonden
Hi Wendy - When I do a custom quilt, I go through the whole quilt with SID, from top to bottom, including borders etc. This stabalizes the whole quilt for me and I can disconnect the one roller and move the quilt safely back and forth if I need to. The reason I do this is if I'm doing for example feathers or McTavishing, I find that if I do some the next day, it may look a little different then the day before. Just the way I work I guess.
