Lynne in Iowa
After reading Anne from Guam's post about wholesale fabric and the lack of a quilt shop near her, I had to count. I came up with at least 30 local quilt shops within about 60 miles from me and I think there could be more. That number doesn't include any of the chain stores, just the independents. I think I need to remember how blessed I am! How many are near you?
GrandmaLKB
Probably about the same for me. I live about 60 miles SE of Des Moines, so have access to all those, plus a few locals less than 20 miles away. We are lucky. We don't have to pay the outlandish shipping prices either. Corey
We used to have 6 quilt shops (4 now) and 5 fabric stores and many, many more within 50 miles radius. Yes, we are so spoiled. Corey
witha'K'quilting
I have one small local fabric store...100 bolts maybe. and a dime store that carries flatfolds. But we do have 2 thrift stores...so I can find cotton shirting/sheets to add to my stash.
Neher-in-law5
So Lynne, how far into the border did your 60 miles go? I know of 5 that I could get to on my way to cross the border to go see yours!! That is only one direction. I could triple that number if I made a full 360 degree circle from my home. The interesting part is that there is usually only one that I go to, the others just aren't in the travel path of business that I do. So nice they all are there, though. Anette D.
We have one small shop in the county. The next closest is over an hour away. Bummer!! Anette D. amdquilts@yahoo.com:o
cblevins
I have 1 about 45 miles away. That is why I carry basic fabric to sell to my customers!

Tamarack
Our little town was without a fabric shop for two years....just when I started my longarm business. But fortunately that didn't effect my business as the local quilters had lots of projects for me to quilt, thank goodness for fabric stashes! We have learned to shop online and go on road trips...closest quilt shop is 400km away. Now a little fabric/craft shop just opened in our town this year so we do have some fabric again but it is a limited selection.
sharni
What I love about traveling is visiting quilt shops especially in small towns. Found a wonderful one in a small older house that had one room all dedicated to 30's reproductions. I think it was in Prosser, Washington.
cjtinkle
Within 60 miles? Zero. Very sad!
Lynne in Iowa
Madelyn I didn't quite make it to Minnesota, St Ansgar is right at the 60 mile limit. Most of the shops that I know of are to the north and northeast so I am sure I missed some in the other directions. If I would up it to 75 miles, I could probably double or triple that number. Neher-in-law5
Lynne, that says that there is a lot of good in the upper midwest!!! St. Ansgar is a doable distance for a fun day for me. I was only there a couple of times. The last time was with the group that Lucy and Marilyn took.
RitaR
We only have 5 that I know of,. none in our town, only one within 30 miles.. pretty sad.. Walmart stopped their fabrics, leaving school and 4H kids with no where to shop within a reasonable distance. How we pray one will open, or Walmart will at least carry flat folds. DB
Ten within a hours drive, including 2 Joann's Fabrics. However my computer and on line shopping is seconds away. Between Hancocks, The Cloth Peddler, Fabric.com and a few others I can always feed my addiction. Dianne
IQuiltToo
Two locally plus a Joanne's. Within an hour to an hour and a half, there are too many to count. We also go to San Diego to visit our son and his family and there are many there, some quite close to their house (Quilt in a Day) is just 10 min. away. When DH goes golfing, I can hit a number of them in 5 hours. It is such good fun! Marilyn
Guest Linda S
The Willamette Valley corridor of Oregon is packed full of quilt shops. We are very blessed indeed. Within a sixty mile radius, we have about 26, and that is not counting Jo Anns, Walmart, and Hancocks.
DB
Wow Linda, I might have to make a trip out your way and go on a little shop hop. Dianne
