The Thread thread - revisiting!

Recommended Posts

It's been awhile since we've talked thread.  I love reading up on thread and hearing everyone's favourites!  You know how many women talk shoes and handbags?   Me...I prefer to talk about thread  ;)

So,  what thread do you use most of the time,  bobbin thread as well?

Me -  I  love Superior's Magnifico,  with Wonderfil Master Quilter and Glide coming in next. I like Superior So Fine, although I haven't used it in quite awhile.    I have a few clients that mention variegated to me...is there a brand that you like in the variegated?   I love Aurifil's variegated, but only 10 colours to choose from.  sigh.

Bobbins -  I really like Wonderfil Decobob pre filled bobbins.   I haven't tried super bobs and have only used one magna glide (sample) so far, so cannot form an opinion on those.   I have wound my own on occasion and I think I am getting spoiled with that concept now that I have tried pre filled bobbins.   At first I was thinking 'what's the big deal'.  And now,  I know.

Any more feedback on Metro and Sigma threads?

I get very overwhelmed looking at the Superior website - so many colours, so many types of threads.

Do you have a favourite colour in your collection?

I love, love, love Superior Threads! ALL OF THEM!!! Love King Tut, Lava, Rainbows, Omni is especially nice if you want poly with a cotton look. I use their Super Bobs almost exclusively, but I do also like Magna Glides. So Fine is another fave.

I am lucky; I can run ANY thread on my Millie. Even Maxi Loc and Coats & Clarks.

I even use their Super Bobs in my DSM Bernina. I just have to blind it or it wont read as a bobbin being in there. I pieced a whole queen size quilt with about 1 1/2 bobbins!!

I like Superior, so Fine and Bottom Line, but I love, love, love Glide and so does my machine.  I still wind bobbins, but love the Glide pre wounds ad top thread.  Used Superior on this last quilt (after doing a number with Glide) - Glide wins.  Multiple breaks with Superior.

I use the Super bobs, bottom line prewounds. So fine and so fine variegated, as well as Glide, and lava. Those I use the most. Not all machines like king tut. My machine is real fussy with it. I also have some signature. I have a lot of thread actually.

I like most of what has been posted already but Freedom really likes for me to wind my own bobbins and having the top thread and bobbin thread the same. She will stitch anything but she seems to like this combination best! And, yes, I do use Maxi Lock (Metro too) thread and use them with great success.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just bought a box of Metro thread to try out and it runs really nicely on my machine and looks nice too.   If any Canadians are curious, it took exactly one week for my box to arrive from the time I ordered.

Can't wait to try out more.

I primarily use So Fine and bottom line.  I have King Tut and Magnifico and use when appropriate.  I bought Metro and like to use that on baby quilts for the shine.  A quilter told me Metro is the cheap version of Isacord.  I basically like to use the same thread because that keeps my tension fine.  It takes me a little while, but I can get King Tut to work perfectly in the machine.  So if I want to use it, I do all my projects at once.  Never have any trouble with So Fine.  I never tried Glide because I have a lot of Superior thread to use.  I always wind my own bobbins because I like to match the thread.

I was using Sigma when I first started because it was all I could afford to get my business going...but I have since switched to Glide.  I think the Sigma is just too thick or stiff or something - I decided I'm not crazy about it unless I have no other option.  I pretty much use Glide or Omni for customer quilts mainly just so I don't have to mess with tension every time I load up a new quilt - unless the customer asks for something specific or it's a special kind of quilting.  I use Wonderfil/Glide/Robison Anton/Sew Fine - a whole assortment for my own - whatever I feel like using.  :)

I usually use same in the top as bobbin, and I wind my own bobbins.

I want to give Metro a shot though - hoping I like it better than Sigma - what do you think?  Is it anything like Glide?  The issues I had with Sigma were a lot of kinking and looping on the underside of my quilts...I have much neater results with Glide or Omni and I don't even use the magna bobbins.  I have the same issues on my domestic as the long arm and don't seem to have it with other thread - but - I've also grown quite a bit since I started so maybe back then I just didn't have the tension down?

Great thread on THREAD!  :)

I started out using So Fine and Bottom Line but now use Glide and Invisafil more.  Glide is so pretty and sews beautifully.  Invisafil is perfect for background work and SID.  When I use Glide, I'll put So Fine, Bottom Line or even Invisafil in the bobbin.   I wind my own bobbins.  I use a different bobbin case for So Fine vs Bottom Line/Invisafil to minimize adjustments.

I love Fil-Tec threads.  Glide is my very favorite, and you can take my Magna-Glide bobbins when you pry them from my cold, dead hands.  I haven't wound a bobbin since trying the Magna-Glides in 2008.  I doubt that I will ever wind a bobbin for my long arm again.  They solve so many tension issues.  Glide, Cairo Quilt (Fil-Tec's cotton), Essense (their monofilament), and now Allure (silk) are such great threads, and the price is great!  I still use some Superior threads from time to time -- I love their quality, but the price is often a bit high for me.  I decided not to spend the money on Metro and Sigma -- too many friends were having trouble with the quality of Metro and having to pitch whole cones.  I know it's not expensive, but I don't have the money to throw out whole cones of thread.  Also, when Sigma came out, the company was having a lot of trouble explaining how it differed from Metro.  In my opinion, if a thread company doesn't know enough about thread to explain the difference, they probably don't deserve my business.

That said, I've never given my machine a thread it didn't like.  Be willing to play with your tension, and you should be able to run anything!

good feedback on the Metro, Linda.   I am enjoying the Metro so far, but am having a little bit of consumer guilt as I really like to support local/north american products -  thus my preference for superior/glide.    but as a comparison, I have looked at the metro thread vs glide vs omni under a magnifying glass ;-)

Val -  The metro appears to have a slightly tighter twist than the glide.  (we're talking slight)  Omni definitely has the tighter twist of the 3 brands.   Sheen is about the same between glide and metro. Slightly less sheen on the metro, but it varies with the colours.   The metro is a bit finer than the omni.

Learned that a magnifying glass is my friend....and that perhaps I need reading glasses LOL

I have been using So Fine 50 on top and super bobs 60 in the bobbin,  They work very well.  I am graduating to using So Fine 50 on top and So Fine 50 in the bobbin.  I have heard that this is the best way to obtain the best thread tension.  I use Superior threads only.  But on occasion I have used 40 weight embroidery thread and it worked very well!.

What is there that is the weight of King tut, but in solid colors.  I like the way my stitches look with that little bit heavier thread.   With the really fine thread I don't get pretty stitches, not sure why.  I mentioned this to Vicki when we were at Sue Patten's class last week.

Teresa,

Glide (Filtec)  and King Tut (Superior)  are both labelled as 40 wt.  Cairo Quilt (Filtec)  and So Fine (Superior) as 50 wt. Premo Soft (Filtec) Tex #35 and Omni (Superior) Tex #30  so about 50  wt.  Bobbinline (Filtec) and Bottomline (Superior)  60wt.

Magna-glide Delights 40wt, Magna-quilt 50wt, Magna-classics 60wt. Prewounds from Filtec.

Superbobs 60wt, Masterpiece and SO fine 50wt are also available in prewounds from Superior.

I don't know of any non glossy thread that is a 30wt or thicker than Glide or KingTut.  Someone else might
