boppinbrandy
The owner wants koi swimming in the huge green border and I was needing some ideas on what to do in the quilt top. Any suggestions would be wonderful!!

SandraC
I'm usually stumped with big borders, but, man, that's really big!!!
Bonnie
Can we say HUGE. You can get Koi clipart from the free sites and make your own stencil or drawing and follow it with a light. With this being as huge as it is..your going to have to fill it with a ton of fish or huge fish and then a background fill, of some sort.
witha'K'quilting
WOW! How about a pantograph in the quilt body? Maybe something like Waterworld or a water type meander. That is definitely a huge border. It is going to take alot of fish to fil it up! Bonnie is right...you will need a background fill around them. mrsbishwit
Willow Leaf Studios has a pantogragh called "Koi" it is very easy to do and would be great for the whole quilt or even in just the very large borders.
Zora
Yikes! That huge green border does nothing for this quilt. What was she thinking??? What about breaking the huge border into sections, as if it were several different borders. Koi in the middle third, with straight lines (like SID) sectioning that off from the other parts of the borders, then a different treatment in the section closest to the quilt and a third design in the section closest to the edge? I really feel for you...this one is a real challenge.
Liam
Wow! that is one huge border! I don't think I have ever seen a border that big.....thats a lot of fish. I agree with Kristina as far as keeping with the same theme in the body of the quilt.
Sandra Darlington
At first glance, I thought that green border was a dust ruffle!
ffq-lar
Interesting size and color choice for the border... My only contribution is, make sure when you stitch the koi that they look good "swimming" in the border as the border will lay on the bed. That is, that they swim back and forth along the length of the border and not across the short way. It may involve turning the quilt to be easier to stich so they look more natural. Quilting Heidi
I have nothing...that quilt is just not talking to me. Maybe you can find a good koi design and then just do water meander around it. This quilt does not talk Asian to me so I'm a little surprised that is what the customer wants. LadyLake
Julie Mullin has a few aquatic patterns in her Earthlines: Natural Wonders pattern pack published by Golden Threads. They aren't koi, but they may give you some ideas for incorporating seaweed and other objects in with the koi. I like Zora's idea of sectioning the green border into different elements. Perhaps starting at the top with widely spaced horizontal lines, then the koi, and finish off with a design that echoes a design element from the fabrics used in the blocks. boppinbrandy
I know.....the green border is horrible!!! I'm guess I'm going to draw LOTS of Koi in the green border..... but I'm just not sure about the inside of the quilt. Should I outline all the trinagles that have the print and meander in all of the purple.....I just don't know.....this quilt makes me sad.
Sheri Butler
What about using a varigated thread in the green as well? I'm just seeing that that pattern with added fish, needs to be in the colors that the main body of the quilt posess. Or, am I all wet? LOL (no pun intended)
LadyLake
Don't be sad! It will turn out fine. I have done large spirals over each block. Do one large spiral and then continue on to the next spiral. The quilting won't show much on the purple -- put your best effort on the green solid border. Stagecl
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and that is what I always told myself when there was a quilt I didn't care for (and there were plenty! Sometimes I wonder what in the h*** were they thinking when they put their top together:P) But it does make it hard to quilt and be creative! Good luck:)
April W
Just thinking along the lines of Lynn & Linda R.....make sure all fish are going horizontal when quilt is on a bed. I also think just a run of fish in the middle third of that huge border would be enough with maybe a watery design above and below the fish??? bobbi
Brandy, you will make it shine! I agree with the above comments, you could use a koi panto through out!
Boni
Brandy, here is a water lily that would go with the koi. I'd do it on the top and in the pieced borders, and you could even do it in the green and place the koi here and there, not necessarily all over. Also, I was looking at your webshots and am interested in your sun/moon/stars design. It's on the dark, black/gray quilt with the shooting star--title Celestial Stitches. Where did you get that design? I found the water lily at Sweet Dreams Quilt Studio, Kim Diamond. She also has koi.
