Matt Sparrow
If you had to recommend 5 colors to a new long arm quilter, what would they be?
nora123
off white or cream, light pink, medium brown, light green and red. Nora
hollyc
white, beige, red, medium blue, one pastel varigated and a partridge in a pear tree.
Matt Sparrow
as I was considering this question I realized that the 5 I would recommend to a new LAQ are not the same 5 that I use the most. I would likely recommend... ecru, chocolate brown, light yellow(variegated), mauve, medium blue.
lyonden
I use poly-core and my staples are 1. Dyed Natural / 2. Ecru (goes with gold, yellow, brown or tan)/ 3. Smoke (black is very stark so we try to use a med to blend with dark or light)/ 4. White / 5.Camel / 6. Chambery or Lucerne Blue / 7. Praline (brownish pink that blends with lots) / 8. Sage Green (this is a grey green)or Green Sage (yes, there are both colors . Sorry but you need more than 5.
Primitive1
Hmmm, if I had to pick 5 they would be: white, ecru, gray, black, and green sage... these seem to go with most colors in quilts.
Matt Sparrow
Can I change my medium blue to a sage green? Definitely a must have I agree!
ffq-lar
For lights--off-white, tan (which in BL is a nice pale yellow) For blenders--sage green, taupe (signature Mother Goose) For darks--dark gray. For unlimited budgets--gimme me ALL of it!!
LibbyG
I really like this question, but Matt, why a variegated yellow?
Laura Farnham
I recommend most of the same above. One not mentioned is "Marron Glace" On the cone, it is a rusty, rosie, blah, mauve color. But it blends well with so many colors!!! They call it the magic thread!!! Love it!! Matt Sparrow
Libby, the variegated yellow goes with almost any baby quilt which I've been getting a lot of lately.
Matt Sparrow
Laura, good call. That's the mauve I was talking about too. I hesitated putting dirty mauve but that's what It looks like on the cone.

Quilting Heidi
For me I think I would go with white, ecru, taupe (mother goose color just like Linda) - this is my most used color, sage green and lime green looks great on baby quilts! carolinequilts
Linnea - I believe the correct pronunciation is "Vunderbar"! And I too, would like to know the manufacturer. And it doesn't sound like I would be able to walk in them either, much less quilt in them! Originally posted by LinneaMarie One not mentioned is "Marron Glace" Ok, who makes this wonderbar thread? Mary Beth
Off white in many tones, Mother Goose, (my favorite in the beginning), I can't think of anything else...it's been too long since I was a beginner. If it didn't happen yesterday, I can't remember.

Sandra Darlington
Interesting topic. I have been in a daze looking at my threads...I can narrow it down to about 50! Sorry. Probably what I use the most is off white, medium tan (Mother Goose color), medium gray, yellow, pink, light blue. I do a lot of Thimbleberries/Moda quilts, and lots of baby quilts, so those are the colors I use the most.
Matt Sparrow
What great input! I too had a really hard time picking just five. Heck, I'd have trouble picking just 20. It's all fair though as my wife has her fabric addiction and I have my thread. Speaking of which I think I'll go put a couple cones in the freezer so they are ready for a long day of quilting tomorrow.
PattyJo
Matt - why are you putting your thread in the freezer? I haven't heard of that before!
