Debi Orr
My husband and I are ready to invest into a comressor. Do you have one you would recommend and why?
qwltnldy
I have a generic brand el-cheapo that my DH bought at Kragen Auto Parts. Ours is 50 gallon, 1 1/2 horse. I know that is big but he put a T-fitting on it and uses it for garage stuff. He rigged up a hose from the garage through our air conditioning duct, which just happens to open up where my machine is. (Yes, he is an engineer LOL) It works really well, I've had it since 2005 and I love it.

ffq-lar
DH bought mine at Harbor Freight for $89. I use it daily and have had it for 6 years. It's a small pancake-type and I turn it off after use so it doesn't automatically turn on and scare the pants off me.
Debi Orr
I have a new Millie that I want to buy the compressor for. I don't knwo how large of a compressor to buy. Doe the size matter?
jimerickson
Debi: It doesn't matter how big it is. In fact the smaller, the more convenient it would be. As little air as you would use to blow out your machine, pump volume isn't a concern. Good luck. Jim
SandraG
Harbor Freight is having a sale this weekend. I saw a pancake compressor for $79.00.
Quilting Heidi
150 PSI Porter Cable is what I use. Luckily I claim this as hubby's toy because I stole it from his workshop!
ffq-lar
The smaller the better, since the smaller tank takes less time to get up to pressure. Check the box to make sure it has the nozzle you need for precision blasting!
delld
No help here. My sweet hubby piped compressed air into my studio. I have two sources. One for the Millie and one for my the other sewing machines. We buy lots from harbor frieght. Good luck.
srichardson
I just bought a pancake style one from Harbor Freight. It was on sale and there was a 20% off coupon in the newspaper. I think it started out at $70+ and I paid $45. I haven't tried it yet. I was previous using a battery powered one that I bought on Amazon. I got tired of the batteries being flat when I needed to use it and they didn't last long once they were recharged. Sue
Chocoholic
Debi, While 50 gallons is over-kill, you do want 3-4 gallons minimum. You don't want a low pressure, high volume compressor or low pressure, low volume. The first is for pumping up mattresses, etc and the second is for air brushing (painting). We have a medium grade pneumatic compressor for air tools and it works wonderfully. We also turn off the motor until we need it to put more air in the tank to keep the noise to when we expect it. ;-) Good luck on your quest for a compressor. Debi Orr
Thanks for all the advice. My husband and I have been looking at all the local stores (Ace, Home Depo, Harbor Freight, Lowes, Wal-Mart, on Line, etc) and doing some comparing and looking at all the reviews. I believe my husband has narrowed it down to one or two with your help :-)
ETownsend
So what do you use compressors for?
njquiltergirl
My advice: buy small! I told my hubby I needed one and he got one that he considered small...but it it not and it is sooo loud!!!!!!!!! I do not use it and even removed it from my quit studio. Canned air is what I use but am on the look out for a tiny one!
Debi Orr
Originally posted by ETownsend So what do you use compressors for? susanramey
I bought mine at Sears, 2 gal 1 HP, for less than $100.00. It came with lots of different nozzles. Hubby built me a little stand for it on wheels so I can wheel it around when I vacum.
Busy Quilting
I have my husbands large compressor 2.0hp that lives outside my sewing room on the terrace. That way hea can use it for pumping up tyres and I just slide the door open to use inside. I switch it off between blow outs as It scares everyone when it starts up in the middle of the night! shirleyl
If your husband already has one int he garage, get an air tank from the auto supply store and fill it up in the garage, don't have to listen to the compressor that way and buy a package with fittings and a coiled hose with a sprayer attachment. That is what I have done. It works great. Had a wheel mount one in my sewing room, but hated when I needed to use it especially if it was after everyone else went to bed as it woke up the whole house. It is a 10 gallon tank I believe that is used to air up tires. Shirley
quiltmonkey
I have the Sears Craftsman model 1.5 hp. I bought it on sale for around $100 several years ago. It's the best investment for my tool box that I ever made. I use it daily.
