Tulip Time

Recommended Posts

I had the honor of teaching this class a few years ago at the local quilt shop. Now one of the students finished theirs and brought it to me to quilt. The pattern is call Tulip Time by Smith Street Designs and the gal who did the emboidery applique and piecing is Lois Fye. It took more than 22 hrs total. Free motion SID and around appliques and background fills and then I let the IQ do the sashings and borders.

I posted the pictures on my facebook https://www.facebook...87546049&type=1

or my Flickr account:

I used two layers of batting: Dream blend 70/30 on the bottom and Dream Wool on the top. I used Bottom Line thread from Superior on top and bottom for stitching you can see and Superior's Monopoly clear matt of the SID.

It still amazes me that I can spend as much time doing the SID as I do on the actual quilting. For a long time I thought I was just slow at it but each time I try to hurry when doing SID I end up unhappy and grab the ripper. I have now resigned myself to the fact that I will always be "slow and fussy" when SIDing. Some quilts really do need to have the SID done and then others look great without it.

My class sample for this quilt was queen size while this student decided to make hers smaller. As I look at hers and then at mine (which was hanging on the wall at the end of my machine's table) I keep thinking that I should take my binding off and frog the entire thing and custom quilt it. Mine was quilted edge to edge by someone else as I had not even thought about owning/quilting my own quilts. This was the quilt that put the idea of owning my own long arm and doing custom work in my brain.
