njquiltergirl
Hi. Just wondering waht stitch length you like for pantos, template boards (like pantos, to me), and SID. Sometimes I think my SID of 11 is too small...like when I have to rip it out! I've been using 10 spi for pantos, but think it is too small. What do you all like??? newmillie2010
I just blundered along on the largest stitch per inch (7 or so) and I have come to really like it. Having said that, I have started experimenting with doing a smaller stitch per inch (9 or 10) if I'm doing a lot of pointy stuff. The bliss is sooooooo smooth that I feel I need that smaller stitch to accentuate the points. And having said that, I'm doing something today without pointy points and I'm back at my 7 stitches per inch and checked it out and it looks way good!!! Just my way to do things. Quilting Heidi
I almost never go below 11. I find that my curves are rounder at 11. Granted it isn't fun for ripping out but I've had to rip out with it as small as it would go and that is definitely no fun!
PattyJo
I agree with Heidi - I find that for my freehand quilting, I like at least 11 and up to about 14 SPI. I've used longer SPI for straight work, like piano keys, or SID, but when I try to do curves or pointy stuff, it just doesn't look as smooth. Then I have to frog it for sure. And I don't want to keep messing with stitch length within one quilt. I prefer it all consistent, so I get better results above 11 SPI.
Primitive1
I too keep my stitch length at 11 all the time, I've only had one customer complain that the stitches were too small and then I never saw her again...probably a good thing anyway.... lisae
For me it also depends on the thread. If I'm using something like King Tut, I will go to 10 or even 9. But for fine work or SID, I use 12 on up...16 for micro work!
meg
i do 9 for SID - and 12-13 for everything else. someone told me this when i first started and i have just always done it this way. i will add - now that i do occasionally turn of my stitch regulator i like the look of a larger stitch in some instances. of course, i never know what that is until i make a mistake and see it! anniemueller
My customers like longer stitches. I've been using 9 and am ready to go longer.
victoriasews
With sofine thread, I use 12 spi. I make the stitches a little longer with Tut or specialty threads, but never less than 10.
sspingler
10 but I'm starting to think 8.
Gator
I use a constant 11 with the IQ.
Guest Linda S
I'm usually in the 10-11 range. I run my tensions pretty tight and anything smaller is almost impossible to rip.
lindasewsit
I am in the 9-10 range...but I need to check with Dawn or someone, cause my stitches are not a consistent length even with my stitch regulator on.
KDquilter
If I'm doing a larger panto I like to use 9.5, a more dense panto 10 - 11. Custom work is definitely 10+ except SID which is back to 9.5.
Chocoholic
Linda Gibbons, I sent you a U2U.
quiltmonkey
With really short stitches you can't see the pretty sheen of the Rainbows thread. I like to keep mine 9 or 10. I don't like teeny tiny stitches unless they are SID or around applique. I think longer stitches are prettier.
meg_marsh
varies according to thread & design. Heavier thread & more open design - definitely longer stitch - maybe 9 - 10. Finer thread and dense design - 12+. Average for me is 10 - 11.
Grace
I don't get constant stitch length with my SR either. Any suggestions?
newmillie2010
if you have an APQS machine, call Amy and she will run through a calibration test and at the end you will perfect stitches. ask me how i know...
