Minky backing

I got a gal bringing me a quilt that has a minky for backing. Has anyone done one before? Can I quit it with the LA? What kinds of problems will I get into? I never did one before so any help is appreciated. Or should I reject doing the quilt?

I have used minky for backing a couple of times. Pin the selvage edges to the leaders...and do not stretch it. It quilts up beautifully. Beware though...the cut edges will shed everywhere.

I ditto what Kristina said..minky fuzz everywhere. I personally think it looks best with a very loose quilting design...finished up they are very pretty.

agree with the loose pattern...I did one that she wanted a little more detail in an oxtagon shape..outlining it etc. It was not that easy staying on line when you went over the bumpies...other than that all the others I have used went great

Ditto Kristina. No problems other than the messy room after! I used So Fine and had no problems.

I have used it on baby quilts, but not on larger quilts. I also pinned the selvages to the leaders.

Be careful not to stretch it too much or your quilt will curl.

Ditto on the above, it is stretchy, just check the bottom of your quilt often but I loved how it turned out!

I've done one fairly large quilt and one baby quilt with it. I was careful to place the sides that stretched the most on my leaders and it stayed put and I didn't have any problems at all. They both turned out very well. I preferred the one with the looser design than the more densely quilted one, although they were both still very nice. Go have fun with it. You'll be glad you did.

I have quilted both minky and fleece for backing but I pin cut edges to the leaders. I've not ever had a problem either but Rainbows and Highlights don't seem to like either. Lava works well (for me) as does So Fine. And yeah the back always looks great.

I have quilted minky backs with no problem. I put a 3" muslin border all the way around to solve the stretching problem and a loose design. I really love the way the minky looks when it's quilted!!

Here's a tip for you. If you have a serger, run a line of stitching (use wooly nylon thread) along the cut edge. It will give just enough, and no mess to clean up afterwards! I love my serger!

Here's a tip about quilting minky I heard recently.  A veteran quilter said to put painter's tape or masking tape along the edges to prevent it from stretching and will help with the fuzz problem.

I use two layers of fleece fairly often.. I use them for the children in the family,

that earned the Habitat for Humanity houses.    The kids love them, and they

are quick and easy to do.  I use some of the On Sale fleece throws from

Walmart.  Not their cheapy junk.. the better kind.  So far haven't had problems

with any thread and have used several different ones on top.

Another tip is to take it outside and give it a few good shakes before loading it. Greatly reduces the lint coming off inside.

Just finished two quilts with Minkie and both quilted up nicely. Quilting shows up real nice on the Minkie back. Hid a few glow-in-the-dark angels on one just for fun.

If the customer brings the quilt top and backing to me in a bag and starts to remove it from the bag, I say "excuse me a second".  I take the top out and then take the bag outside and remove the minkee, give it a good shaking and run my hand along the cut edge.  If the bag is a reusable bag I turn it inside out and shake it also to remove the fuzz.  It really saves on the fuzz getting on my floor and table.
