mskazooli
This is my latest quilt and the first picture is just the top. I was going to ask for ideas but then tried my hand at meandering. I've never done it but figured there was no time like the present. My question is from the next two pictures. Please ignore the threads (the quilt is still on the machine) but I need some ideas for the sashing that would go with the meadering. The sashing measures 1". You'd think I could come up with something, but my brain is fried after concentrating on all that meandering. Don't laugh, it WAS my first time to try! mskazooli
Here are 4 of the nine blocks.
mskazooli
And a close-up (remember- no giggling at the threads or the meandering!).
Bekah
Martha why would we giggle? you did a great job, meandering is just not as easy as we like to think it is to get it looking uniform and nice. Is this your quilt? I have these patterns and all the material but they are in my pile of PIGS. I like how it is put together
Bekah
How about a small leaf design in the sashing?
mskazooli
Yea, I made this quilt to donate it for a fundraiser, but my DH is starting to make "ownership" noises. He really like it! And I like the idea of the leaves. Now why couldn't I think of that?
mskazooli
Thanks, Bekah!
TerriVB
Martha--Love this quilt and have not ever seen any of these fabrics--are they a panel or is it a pattern. I would like to know where to find it. Thanks Oh by the way--love the leaves in the sashing idea!!
Bonnie
how wide are the sashings....
quiltmonkey
Hi Martha! Oh that quilt is so pretty! I am thinking if the sashings are only 1 inch wide or so, you don't need to put anything in there. Some things are better left unquilted, especially a narrow strip like this. witha'K'quilting
I agree with Shana. That is what I was thinking too. Leave the sashings as is.
Quilting Heidi
Pretty quilt. I think you could just SID around the sashing and call it a day or your could do leaves. Really anything works. I'm always one for SID though if you are going to do each block separately. IMHO it just makes the quilting look finished.
KathG
Hi Martha I can understand why your DH really like it. Your quilt is really pretty.
ramona-quilter
I agree with Shana. 1 inch or less looks fine without quilting as long as you stabilize the blocks with SID, you'll be fine.
DoryJM
Just adding my .02 I vote for SID and no leaves. The quilt is very nice and your quilting is great. I think SID would just finish it off nicely. And, I'm with your DH...keep it!!
PattyJo
Just because I'm feeling spunky and want to be different today, I saw a really pretty design that works well in narrow sashing. I will try and tell about cause I don't have any pictures of it. It is a undulating curvy line with a very small leaf about ever 2 or 3 inches alternating from one side to the other. The leaf is only about 1/2 " long and with that much space between the leaves, it looks very elegant. It is SO MUCH EASIER than SID unless you like to do that. I think that it would really look nice with this elegant quilt. Just another .02 cents worth!!
lindasewsit
OHH! Pretty quilt!! and your quilting is very nice!! I do like the idea Patty Jo had with the little leaves.... It would be easier and quicker than SID! you did a great job! Show us what you do with the sashes....whatever will be great! linda
mskazooli
Oh, thank you so much, everyone. I love this quilt and really can't decide whether to keep it or not. It is a MacKenna Ryan fusible applique pattern. I was really very happy with the way it turned out, and the meandering too! I'll have to sleep on which idea I'll go with for the sashing. I've been out to eat with friends and margaritas were in order, so I don't dare do anything right now! But thanks for all your wonderful support!. I'll post a picture when it's done, whatever I do. . .
IBQLTN2
wonderful quilt and super job of meandering. I really enjoy meandering, I know it is sometimes overdone, but I think it is fun and makes such a nice soft inviting looking quilt. hope to see a picture of the finished quilt soon. doodlebug
i also vote for SID , no design in the sashing. i've quilted 1" wide borders/sashings then realized it was just TOO much and pushed the quilting over the line. let the sashings be a 'mental resting' place for the viewer's eyes JMHO
yeoldeforest
I love McKenna Ryan's "simple" applique designs. Here's the link to the patterns. Quilt shops sell these patterns too. You can also take the panels and make small wall hangings out of each block. http://www.pineneedles.com/ Great job!
MarieBrewer
Good job!! I find meandering to be very difficult. I would much rather loop or do swirls. Perhaps I should have put more puzzles together instead of always sewing or painting.
mskazooli
Ok, I finished the quilting and I decided to, as Shannon said, let the sashing be a resting place for the eye with no quilting. I think it kind of looks like each block is framed and I like it. I did do SID and it wasn't as hard as I was afraid it would be. It's not perfect but I'm pleased. Anyway, thanks for looking. Oh, and I haven't decided but am leaning towards keeping this one!
mskazooli
And one final picture.
Quilting Heidi
Martha very nice. I'm glad you decided to leave the sashing unquilted. It frames it nicely.
