LauraB
Hello! I need some ideas. My name is Laura and this is my first post. You all are so generous with your ideas and I hope you can give me a hand. A customer brought me this quilt. The clamshell piecing gives this quilt such great texture, and I don't want to lose that. It looks like fish scales. Any ideas that will enhance the texture? Thanks for any help.

IBQLTN2
really lovely quilt. Love all the different textures. I don't suppose you could match up those clamshells to a clamshell ruler could you. Maybe it would be too much but I think it would look great. Sandra Darlington
That's very nice and it's a design that I don't remember ever seeing. I hope you will post a picture after you quilt it. Welcome to the forum.
Just Sew Simple
I'm with Jeanne on this one. Clam shells would be perfect!
meg_marsh
It is a great pattern - but very busy. I think I would look for a soft swirling overall that relates in pattern sized to the pattern of the quilt. Let the quilt speak for itself. Then I would do a border that relates. Maybe some minimal feathers in each of the clamshells and then a feather border. It would be a lot of work and not sure how much time you want to spend. Is there a clamshell ruler that matches up to the pattern - would go a little quicker then. Love the white to blue to purple. Really eye-catching! quiltmonkey
A nice swirly curly edge to edge panto would look really nice. Maybe feathers?
dtreusch
How about clam shells with a design inside each shell? Maybe a little swirl up the middle of each shell or tufts of grass from the side of each shell or a little feather up the middle of each shell. The possibilities are endless. I think Deloa Jones has some stuff on her web site for different ways to do clam shells and I think she posted something here recently regarding some clam shell stencils. Laurie
My first thought was to do a clamshell pattern right on the lines of the quilt.... a sort of SID. Very effective but a PITA since it would be difficult (I think) to exactly match the size. So, what I would probably do is a small squiggly line along the seams replicating a clamshell pattern/SID but way easier. Does that make sense? It would be beautiful and fast. Then, I would do something leafy or feathery in the border. I wish I had a drawing tablet so I could show what I mean
Sylvia
Yowza!! I think I would also go with something soft and allover. Quiet it down a bit. There is so much there already it could get overbearing. Light blue or white thread might be good too. Please send pics when it is done. ramona-quilter
Yeah, on the difficulty scale, clams have to be right at the top. I like the swirling idea or even feathers or even a panto like Fantasia or Waterworld, still soft and circular.
kennan100
I like Debbie's idea of the clamshell with something in each one. I also like the idea of the Waterworld panto, or a freehand all over water pattern with a few swirls now and then for interest.
bobbi
Well, Laura B - welcome to the chat! What a lovely quilt!!! I agree with the girls, the clam shell would be so fabulous, but very hard. Can't wait to see it finished!
Bonnie
Clamshells....oh would be so perfect on this quilt I agree. or if you can't get a clamshell the exact size that you need...I would just SID around each clam and go with that.... dtreusch
Instead of trying to SID each clam shell exactly, how about using a circle template that is about 1/4 inch larger or smaller than the clamshell? The would have the effect of outlining each clamshell and would be faster than trying to SID. Or maybe offset the clam shells you are stitching from the pieces shells so it looks like overlapping clam shells? Just an idea. I'm not sure how this would look. I would first draw over the quilt on some plastic before attempting this to see if you like it and it looks ok. Debbi
Mary Beth
My first thought was CL Swirls or something like it. I know not everyone has the CL. I think clamshells would be too much clam in one quilt. Besides, that is a lot of SID or detail and I think it could get lost since the fabric is so busy. So....I say all of that to say this....something swirly would be good
victoriasews
I'm with Debbi on this one, filler for the shell. I think it would really enhance the piecing. My first choice would be the tufts of grass (3 of them) form the side of the clam.
quiltaholi_518
There's a varigated Rainbows that would rock with this quilt, blues and lavendar... http://www.superiorthreads.com/index.php?option=com_phpshop&page=shop.browse&category_id=59&keyword=&manufacturer_id=&Itemid=88&orderby=pshop_product.product_name&limit=30&limitstart=0 #802 No matter what you quilt, the right thread makes it sing!!! Loes
Hi Laura, How about the clamshell pattern we digitized based on Claudia Pfeil's award winning Paradise quilt? It's a very intricate pattern, outer shape is a clamshell, inner shapes are Claudia style feathers and swirls. If you use that pattern over 6 or 7 rows of patches of the quilt, it might look perfect The pattern is from http://www.longarmpatterns.com Click on Patterns, click on Designs by Claudia Pfeil It's called ClaudiaMakingWaves. Below is a preview projected on your quilt. Loes

LauraB
WOW!!! I was totally stumped on this one. You guys are great!!! You have given me so much food for thought.... Chocoholic
I agree with Mary Beth, clam shells would be too much clam! I think a nice over all water-look over the clams would be perfect. After all, clams live in the water, right?! Then something else in the border, feathers, swirls, or ??? Have fun with this one, but don't get to busy, as it would hide the piecing and the piecing is exquisite.
Sheri Butler
I 3rd the too much clam! A nice flowing panto or freehand design would be awsome on this quilt.
ramona-quilter
Loes, that is fabulous. I love that pattern. I bought the software and I have to admit that I have not had time to create anything as beautiful as the clams-ala-Claudia. I'm heading over to your web-site. mountainmanda
I see water when i look at this, granted I have been outa commission for a while but water came immediately to mind when i saw this top. a free flowing design of waves with the thread that Caron suggested would be off the hook.
