NQR - Really? Yup - really. Another update

Recommended Posts

Found out yesterday that the neurosurgeon I saw was approved by my insurance, but not the hospital where he does his surgery. Badda bing badda boom. My ENT has to start the whole process again with a new referral. This time it's to UC San Francisco, which is rated #5 in neurosurgery. I'll be in really good hands once I get into their system.

Still paper piecing and quilting, passing the time away waiting for a new appointment and the necessary surgery. God has a very interesting way of working things out. Teaching me lots of patience and finding the humor and zen in this situation.

Quilt on dear quilters!

It's about how much the hospital will charge and how much the insurance will pay. If they can't come to an agreement, the insurance won't cover the surgery/hospitalization, etc. That's what this is all about and we didn't find out until they attempted to schedule my surgery. It's bizarre but how "for profit" health insurance can work. Bottom line, it's about their profit. I'm just thankful my family has insurance and there is still somewhere fairly close that I can be taken care of.

don't forget the U of U in Salt Lake City, Utah - my daughter had Arnold Chiari Malformation and surgery up there at Primary Children's Hospital when she was 15 (7 years ago) and is doing great! They had to open the spinal cord opening and sew a "gussett" into her dura matter to make room for her brain (too big for her skull?!). When she tipped her head back, she would get dizzy and when she bent forward she would get sick, it got worse and worse over a few years and then she got so she couldn't lay back at all - it took an MRI to finally figure it out! So sort of the same as you - too much brain?!

Insurance can be a pain, with all their dumb policies and procedures, but we are all thankfull we have it when it comes to these kind of situations. I work in a not for profit hospital, so we see all of the people that do not have insurance. I feel for them on a daily basis. They are so afraid of what they are going to do about their problems. So, I'm glad you can look at it in a possitive light, and we will all keep thinking good thoughts for you.

I hope you come out okay with the insurance. Being retired, I'm really having an eye opener on insurance. Things that used to be covered in full while I was working have very little coverage now, and I've had to plunk down a lot of money for too many things. I had a bad spot on my mammogram back in August and they wanted me to come in for a special view mammo and an ultra sound. I scheduled it, and then they called to tell me how much I had to pay. I cancelled the tests, as they were outrageously expensive. I've been through this three times before and can tell you that those tests would have told them nothing. If they continued to think the spot was suspicious, I would have had to have a biopsy to be certain (as I've done three times before). No way I'm paying for a slew of tests and then ending up with a biopsy anyway. I go back in on Monday to have a left-side only mammo to look at the spot again. If they want another look at it after that, they'll have to biopsy it.

Just make sure you have it in writing from your insurance company that it was properly approved. I had two appointments with a breast specialist and a second ultrasound that my doctor said was approved and both places I went to said I was approved then lo and behold...6 months later I'm having to pay the bills because neither one approved it properly with the insurance. How does that happen? I have three kinds of insurance and I'm paying the bill? I frequently refer to my Blue Shield of CA as BS of India. I've had two of these insurances for well over 10 years and one of them for 20 years and the primary seemed surprised that I had two secondary policies even though we go through the same declaration paperwork practically yearly.

I say this because you're having surgery and that can and probably will be up in the $$thousands and you don't want to be left holding that bag. Seriously would cut into your quilting budget. Can't have that happening.

Other than that...you're in a good area for good, qualified surgeons and medical centers. Once the paperwork is taken care of you will be too. Keep us posted.

Laura, just seeing this and searched back to find out what is going on with you. I'll be adding my prayers along with all the others. Hang in there girl, and yes keep up that good sense of humor! I think that's God's way of helping us cope with stress. Glad that you have your quilting to keep you busy while your waiting. ;)
