JustSewSimple
What do you have that you love? Top load? Front load? They can be sooooo expensive now. I want to know how you like yours. Mine are about 15 years old.
Quilting Heidi
Sylvia, I have a Kenmore front loader and just love it. It uses 1/2 the soap of a regular machine and even less water. My clothes are cleaner and they are tortured with the agitator but most important is I can easily wash my quilts without worrying about them. I did a 92" quilt last night and it came out great! I used to have a frontloader before they were popular but it was hard to have it worked on. I loved that machine and I hated going back to the one that had the agitator. When we finally moved again I replaced it with another front loader and I won't ever go back! They are well worth the money.
Ferret
In the UK pretty much everyone has a front loader. I remember my family getting one in the early 80's. I wouldn't want to go back to a top loader thanks. Not that they are even available new here new. Ferret
meg
i also have a kenmore frontloader and i like it. i have heard that if you are getting a front loader that LG has thebest one on the market now. i chose a frontloader cause it is supposed to be much better for the environment. but you know how that is - you cant always believe what they tell you cause there is always another spin on it. make sure to get one with a big capacity - it is worth the $. JustSewSimple
Ladies, the front loader rolls around, right? That way it doesn't hurt the quit? What capacity did you get? I love the idea of not much detergent because I am allergic to most soaps and detergents. I have to use a brand for a few weeks and then swap out for another and then another and then.....you get the idea. Did you get the dryer to match? Hollyrw
We just bought a new washer & dryer. Whirlpool, front loader, steam in the dryer, etc. So far I love them. The washer takes way less water. I think the guy told me 4.5 gallons to do a load. I had read about front loaders getting smelly so was a bit concerned. This one has a special cycle you use, along with some cleaning tablets, to sanitize it. We also leave the door open to reduce the likelihood that mold will grow. mrsbishwit
I have the Maytag Neptune front loader (large capicety plus- I have a large family so needed the largest one they had at the time) I can wash a 114" sq quilt in it with room to spare I also got the dryer to match. Love my washer and dryer. The only thing I would change would be to purchase the pedastals that they sell for them that raises them up off the floor, we didin't get them and now I am kicking myself for that decision...laundry baskets keep getting hit buy the doors when transferring the laundryback and forth not to mention all of the bending down I have to do, no fun
meg
holly - yes - they can get nasty if they get moldy. i always run a hot wash with bleach for my whites every week or so - and i leave the door open as well. i have never had a problem and ive had mine for over 3 years. sylvia - get the biggest one you can afford - it is worth it. also, make sure to have rubber grips on hand when they install to place under the legs to prevent the machine from walking during the spin cycle. and ALWAYS use less rather than more detergent. LibbyG
Last year we bought the whirlpool matching front loader and dryer. We love the large capacity. We bought the pedestals with them because we're both tall and didn't want to bend. They're on a concrete floor so we have no problem with them moving, but they will move if you don't have them on the correct surface. With a front loader you have to watch when you take out your clothes or they'll fall on the floor. You must leave the doors open for them to dry out. My friend just bought the top loader Maytag Cariole??? without the agitator inside. She bought the largest model she could and she loves it, too. Good luck with your choice! Quilting Heidi
Sylvia - I have the biggest one they made at the time and yes they roll around. I also got the dryer. Holly to avoid the mold we keep ours open when not in use. Not wide just enough to let the moisture out. Every once in a while I run a cycle on hot with bleach just to clean it out good. Sharon M
I also have the Kenmore front load washer and dryer set. Love them! Big enough for large quilts. I have the steam option in my dryer. It's been wonderful for taking the wrinkles out of the batting.... I set it for 10 mins (sometimes less) with steam. Works great! No issues with odor in the washer either. I always leave the door open too. Get a big one! your quilts will love it! ....and the pedestals too. Sooo glad I got them. Mary Beth
I have a Whirlpool Cabrio, which is a top loader that thinks it's a front loader It works fine, uses the HD soap, like the front loaders, no aggitator....but if I were buying...I would go front loader all the way baby!!! LeeAnn
I just bought a Maytag frontloader. Just love it! I didn't get the pedestals as they were another $200 apiece! Made me mad that I had to buy them and they didn't come with the washer so I didn't get them. so I just bend over to wash, no big deal to me. I also wash a king sized quilt in mine, no problem. My last Maytag lasted 30 years so I'll let you know how long this one lasts!
francine
Avoid the BOSCH AXXIS front loaders We waited 4 months for ours and we hate them.
mswings
I have the Whirlpool Duet Steam washer and dryer. Love them. We did get the pedestals and love them as well. I think they should've come with it. I think they were pretty pricey but am glad we chose to buy them. I had my Maytag washer and dryer as long as LeeAnn did. I'm sure these will never last that long. They just don't make um like they used to. I also leave the washer door open when not in use and clean with bleach when prompted by the time to clean washer light. When we got ours we also received free Tide detergent for 3 years. We really do save on our H20 bill. We were really surprised. Anyway, we are very happy with our purchase.
witha'K'quilting
From one who washes 3-4 loads per day...I love my LG front loading washer and matching dryer. WOuldn't be without it. I will never again go to a top loading washer. The front loader does a fantastic job of washing. Love it. I bought the largest capacity washer/dryer set made at the time. Don't remember the capacity...but trust me...it does the job well. I use 'he' high efficiency soap in the washer as recommended...and even use less than I need to. The clothes are still cleaner than ever in a top load machine!
IQ'd
I bought the Electrolux front loader and matching dryer. The washer has a 4.75 cubic foot capacity and I can wash and dry my king size comforters. I love them. I can wash pillows, my dogs stuffed toys, just about anything. I think the clothes come out cleaner and no wear from the agitator. The only draw back for me is that the dog hair doesn't come out as completely as the top loader! I too keep the door open, at least until it dries out good. I had put some towels in to wash one time right after I had done a load and closed the door. A couple of days later I opened the washer to add some towels and wash them and found mold on the ones that had been in the washer!!! I'll never do that again! IQuiltToo
Interesting topic to come home to tonight. After much research, I went out and bought the Samsung washer and gas dryer today. Steam in both the washer and dryer. I am replacing Maytags that have been a piece of c---. I have to respin a load up to 3 times to get the water out. Have had lid problems. I said I will not put any more $$ into them, They are 8 yrs. old...and only washing for 2. I have always bought above the cheapest, but below the middle. Have to say, we had friends here who wanted to go to the casino. I hit enough $$$ and more on my first $20. It was a good win. I pocketed it and kept it until today. No way was I going to put that back into a slot machine. So, I have a new washer and dryer being delivered tomorrow. For the first time in my life, I have a top (or close to) of the line. I think I am going to love doing laundry for the next few weeks. My knees and back are going to have such relief. I'll keep you posted...am really looking forward to having these machines! MarieBrewer
I would make sure you have a "spin only" cycle. I have a rinse and spin but can't just spin. On the plus side, I couldn't figure out if I had washed a load once because the clothes felt so dry so I washed them again. I have the LG and I do leave the door open all the time. It is spring loaded so it's wide open.
Gator
I have a 15year old Kenmore front load washer and dryer. I got my front loaders after using them on ships, if sailors couldn't kill them neither could I!!!!! The older front loaders never pushed out all the water after a load. Some water always remained under the drum which caused mold to form and smell. I believe the new models have fixed that problem. I also leave my door open and use a plastic c-clamp to keep the drum light off. LOL, after reading your notes, I think I want a new set!!! I've spent more money on 1 DSM then these things cost. Is the "steam" models worth the extra price? I've been looking at the LGs but really partial to Kenmore appliances.
meg
hi - one more thing .... the pedestals - i bought them and they do raise the machine to a very nice height. i like mine. however, my sister stacked hers (and she is a shorty) and had her hubby build her a nice folding table/storage area where the dryer would have gone. even though i have a big house with lots of storage - i wish my laundry room was bigger. wish i had thought of this! LinneaMarie
We have a friend who has fixed washers and dryers for years. He says Whirlpool or Kenmore all the way. Less repairs. I have a Maytag washer and I usually love it. Sometimes it goes out of balance when it spins, WHONK, WHONK, WHONK!! Very LOUD!! DH says I don't know how to load the machine! HUH? I've been doing it for 40+ years with no problems. Besides the washer mixes it all up anyway. I do try to load it balanced but it doesn't stay balanced, obviously. Next washer will be Kenmore or Whirlpool, and no front loader for me; I like to open it mid cycle and add or take out.
fabric007
I have bouight the oasis from kensmore...top load..decides how much water you need...doesnt have the thingy in the middle...the thing that twists the clothes...I like mine..clothes come out less damp and shorter dryer time.. quiltnutt
I got the front loader when my washer passed away 2 yrs ago. I love it,the only thing I didn't get was the stand to raise it up higher. I wish I did that.
